Perfect, Arrived Safe and Fast. Exactly what I wanted 🙂 Thank you very much for accepting my offer :)Women’s fashion has a long and colorful history and, in the 20th century, newspapers recorded it all! You can find newspaper pages full of pictures of the latest fashion from Paris, department store ads with drawings of the popular frocks of the day, and articles covering social events and the clothes worn by the fashionable people who attended. Here’s a look at the history of fashion through newspapers, starting with the time period 1900 to 1920. This is part 1 of a 3-part series that will cover the history of fashion from 1900 to 1960.
Although the first decade of the 20th century saw significant technological advances, women’s fashion remained largely the same as it had looked in the previous century. At the beginning of the decade, the Gibson Girl’s structured silhouette was popular and was the ideal look of Edwardian era style. Lace and other decorations are important. Simple dresses, bodies shaped by corsets, and flashy embellishments dominated women’s fashion.

For most of this decade, the fashionable silhouette was the S shape created by the new “health corset”. This corset takes pressure off the stomach, but results in the breasts being pushed forward and the hips pushed back. The top is loose and the blouse helps to emphasize the heavy shape of the top. The sleeves are also dramatic and the long, heavy skirt has been enhanced with a lace coat.
Daily wear emphasizes modesty, covering the body from the neck to the floor with long sleeves covering the arms. The skirt is bell-shaped and decorated with lace. Rich fabrics are usually used, such as silk satin, damask and chiffon, usually in bright and soft colors. The overall stylish look is like a mature and sophisticated woman.
Evening dresses usually follow the same silhouette, although these dresses are more revealing with a low neckline and short sleeves, often offset by wearing long gloves. Arms are also sometimes draped over the shoulders.
Towards the end of this period, many women began working outside the home for the first time and they sought more practical clothing in the form of “tailor made” – women’s skirt suits. This suit was functional and stylish for women entering the workplace and it became a symbol of independence.

While the prevailing style favored embellished day and evening wear, women began to focus on dressing for the occasion. There is increasing importance placed on event-specific dressing. Wealthy women usually have many clothes, from theater and evening gowns to morning and evening dresses and practical clothes for outdoor activities and sports.
Also during this period, sports such as golf, tennis, cycling and motoring began to have an influence on fashion and inspired new styles.
Fashion began to mellow as the decade passed. The rigid S shape popular in the early part of the decade was gradually straightened into a more natural shape. The billowing blouse that hangs at the waist in the front is replaced by a narrower loose top, sleeves and skirt. Higher waists and tubular silhouettes began to emerge as fashion moved into the 1910s.

The fashion of the 1910s can be divided into two periods: before the war and during the war. The First World War had a fundamental impact on society and culture, and fashion was no exception.

The 1910s began with a softer, more natural silhouette than the rigid S-shape that had dominated the previous decade, although in the early years, there was still an emphasis on the bust and top-heavy looks. As the decade passed and the S-shape began to disappear, empire waists made a comeback and skirts began to taper down.

At the beginning of the decade was the rise of Orientalism, where aspects of the Eastern world were imitated or depicted in Western art, entertainment, and fashion. Designer Paul Poiret popularized a look that featured feathered fabrics, bright colors and column-like silhouettes. In 1911, he also introduced the “harem skirt” which only the bravest women chose to wear. Poiret’s inventive fashion and newsmaking dominated the first half of the decade. He also invented the “hobble skirt” which narrowed so tightly at the bottom that it made it difficult for women to walk. He and other designers of the time created fashion that no longer required tight corsets.
Another notable designer of the time was Lady Duff Gordon, a London-based designer who moved across the pond to New York and Chicago earlier in the decade. French designer Jacques Doucet is known for his simple and fluid designs.
In July 1914, the world was thrust into “the war to end all wars.” Women began working in munitions factories as part of the war effort and began wearing uniforms that included tunics over skirts, overalls and trousers. Simple and utilitarian clothing made of cotton became popular during the war.
The United States did not enter World War I until 1917, but the war’s effect on fashion was already felt in Europe. The production and distribution of new fashion from France, which has been the center of fashion for many years,
