Globally, fixed internet connection speeds averaged 7.2 megabits per second this quarter, up 2.3 percent from last quarter and up 15 percent from a year ago, according to Akamai’s latest State of Content Delivery Networks Report.

U.S. entered the list of top 10 countries with the fastest average fixed internet speeds this quarter. Its 18.7 Mbps speed is up 22 percent year over year, thanks in part to internet service provider upgrades. South Korea, with an average internet speed of 28.6 Mbps, has the fastest internet of any country measured by Akamai.

In the U.S., Washington, D.C. has the fastest average internet connection at 28.1 Mbps. The fastest state is Delaware at 25 Mbps, while the slowest is Idaho at 12 Mbps. The Federal Communications Commission considers download speeds of 25 Mbps or higher to be broadband.

We analyzed more than three million speed tests conducted to find out which states have the fastest and slowest average internet speeds. Here’s what we found.

Some US households have access to gigabit internet, which is fast enough to stream movies on 20 devices at the same time. Other households barely have enough bandwidth to stream a single YouTube video. So which city has the edge on speed? And which ones are left behind?

Our data analyzer analyzed two million speed test results. They took the average of every city in the US and ranked them from fastest to slowest.

According to our recent analysis, the average internet speed in the 100 largest metros in the US is 89.3 Mbps. But the difference between the fastest and slowest metros is 96.4 Mbps.

If you’re having trouble with slow speeds for remote work, streaming or online gaming, you can find the fastest internet provider in your area. But you might be lucky to move to a new metro with faster internet.

We analyzed the 100 largest metros in the US (according to FCC data) and found the fastest and slowest average internet speeds across the US.

Metro includes multiple cities, some even cross-state—this gives a broader view of big cities and their internet speeds.

Washington, DC, tops the list with an average download speed of 129.1 Mbps—which is nearly 40 Mbps faster than the average internet speed in the 100 largest metros. DC’s speed is nearly four times that of the slowest metro: Charleston, West Virginia.

A total of 37 metros had average download speeds above 100 Mbps, and six metros averaged above 120 Mbps. We also provide rankings for median download speeds, which may represent what the “average person” in the metro has; the average speed looks faster because the average includes people with very fast internet speeds that can be 10 times faster.

Charleston has the slowest speeds by far of the 100 largest metros, with a speed of 32.7 Mbps. The next slowest was Boise, Idaho, at 56.9 Mbps. Only 38 of the 100 largest metros fell below the national average of 89.3 Mbps.

But over the past 12 months, internet speeds seem to be improving—sometimes dramatically—around the world. The pace has increased along with the needs of the pandemic—more people are working from home, attending school remotely, accessing health care and staying home for entertainment.

When we look at the median speed, which probably better represents the speed that the average person in an area has, we can see New York City go from a median of 57.5 Mbps to 79.94 Mbps, a jump of over 20 Mbps in a year.

In our 2020 internet speed report for cities (non-metro), we recorded the fastest internet speed in Whitestone, New York (138.4 Mbps) and the slowest internet speed in Stowe, Vermont (7.3 Mbps).

Metros contain several cities, so our 2021 report shows a more balanced average download speed. The fastest cities are now accompanied by slower surrounding areas and vice versa.

If you want to live near a major city without paying downtown prices, you can find the internet speed you need in every major metro in the US.

In the Appalachian town of Huntsville, Alabama, internet speeds jumped a full 200% from February 2020 to February 2021—the median speed increased from 27 Mbps to 82 Mbps. Rochester, New York, also saw a big increase in speed during that time, increasing nearly 140% from 23 Mbps to 56 Mbps.

Five other cities saw internet connections double or nearly double in speed, including Des Moines, Iowa; and Madison, Wisconsin.

Not all cities in America saw an increase in speed last year, but in general the decrease in speed was not as drastic as the increase. Average speeds in Colorado Springs, Colorado, dropped 15% from 57 Mbps to 49 Mbps, while Charleston, West Virginia, saw median speeds drop 11% from 9 Mbps to just 8 Mbps.

Our results include proprietary speed tests from February 1, 2020, to March 16, 2021. We sifted through incomplete, duplicate, and mobile data to see what most people use on their laptops, desktops, and connected devices at home.

We use a total of 1.3 million results generated from our internet speed test tool for our rankings.
