Today is the last day to file your income tax unless you have decided to file a tax return. And whether you file using your own tax software or go through a tax pro, you can get some money back through a tax refund. The tax changes in 2023 have slightly smaller refunds than last year, but the average tax refund is still $2,910 so far this season.
Once you’ve completed and filed your tax return, there’s not much to do other than wait for your tax refund. However, it’s easy to tell when your IRS money will arrive so you can plan financially for it.

Whatever format you choose for your tax return, we’ll show you how to track the status of your return and any money the IRS owes you.
The fastest way to monitor your tax refund is the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? page, which will also let you know if your refund has been rejected due to errors.
To use the IRS’s tracker tools, you must provide a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, your filing status (single, married or head of household) and the amount of your refund in whole dollars.
If you are not taken to a page that shows the status of your refund, you will be asked to confirm your personal tax data and try again. If all the information looks correct, you’ll need to enter the date you filed your taxes, as well as whether you filed electronically or on paper.
Where Is My Refund?
Make sure it’s been at least 24 hours before you start tracking the return online, or up to four weeks if you mailed your return.
The Where’s My Refund Tool lists federal refund information from the IRS for the past two years. If you are looking for return details from previous years, you will need to check your IRS online account.
From there, you can see the total amount you owe, your payment history, important information about your most recent tax return, notices you’ve received from the IRS and your address on file.
The IRS also has a mobile app called IRS2Got that can monitor the status of your tax refund. It is available for both iOS and Android and in English and Spanish.
When Will I Receive My Tax Refund?
You can see if your refund has been received and approved in the app, and if the refund has been sent.
To log in, you’ll need your Social Security number, filing status and your expected refund amount. The IRS updates the app nightly, so if you don’t see a status change, check back the following day.
Although the Where is My Return tool usually shows a status of Received, Approved or Sent, there are other messages that some users may see.
The most common is Tax Topic 152, which indicates that you may be receiving a refund but it has not yet been approved or sent. The notice simply links to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

There may be delays in an automated message being sent to taxpayers claiming the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit due to additional fraud prevention measures.
Tax Topic 151 means your tax return is now under review by the IRS. The agency needs to either verify certain credits or dependencies, or determine that your tax return will be reduced to pay the money it believes you owe. You will have to wait about four weeks to receive a notice from the IRS explaining what you need to do to resolve the status.
There are other IRS refund codes that a small percentage of tax filers receive, indicating freezes, math errors on tax returns or undelivered checks. College Investor offers a list of IRS refund reference codes and errors and their meanings.
Getting live phone help at the IRS is very difficult. In 2022, only 13 percent of taxpayers reached a man, according to Erin M. Collins, the National Taxpayer Advocate.
Irs Backlogs Causing Massive Delays In Processing Returns
Congress has increased the agency’s funding, and the IRS said it has hired more than 5,000 new telephone representatives. Still, the agency says you should only call if it’s been at least 21 days since you filed your taxes online, or if the My Return tool tells you where to.
Otherwise, the IRS is directing taxpayers to the Help Us page on its website and for in-person assistance at taxpayer assistance centers across the country. You can contact your local IRS official or call 844-545-5640 for an appointment. If you qualify for assistance, you can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778.
If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see the IRS TREAS 310 transaction listed. The 310 code only identifies the transaction as a refund of a tax return filed in the form of an electronic payment. You can also see TAX REFin in the details field for a refund.
