From 1 January 2022, you can continue to file your homestead exemption in the same year you buy your home and you will receive a partial exemption, pro rata for that year. Keep in mind that the homestead exemption is NOT automatic. You must submit it yourself to the country where the house resides. You can do this directly with the country. It’s FREE. The exemption reduces a homeowner’s property tax bill by removing a portion of the home’s value from taxes. Other taxing entities may also offer exemptions of a percentage of the home’s value. Other exemptions are available to homeowners who are over 65 or disabled and require the same application process.
