It’s safe to say that for a while the Chaos Space Marines have become a bit of a meme in recent times. While all the other Space Marines got their extra wounds and abilities, the Chaos Space Marines stuck with their only wounds and old books – and with each passing book the glimmer of hope that we might just become the next one grew. .
But now thankfully there’s no more waiting – Chaos Space Marines have their new Codex, and they look really good too! In this review we will take a look at what they currently have, review their profile and check out their Crusade content!
First, this is a very thick book! With 184 pages this is a hefty tome. The first 50 or so pages are dedicated to lore, and I have to say that Games Workshop continues to put some absolutely gorgeous artwork in their books. From the stylized cover with red evocative black and blue, to some stunning pieces throughout, the book is a real treat for the eyes. From a lore perspective, we also get updates on the Traitor Marine forces, each of the Legions, information on the renegade warbands and even old favorites like Fabius Bile and Huron Blackheart. We also find some great stories and narratives interspersed among these. I always find that the lore section is something that always gets me excited to start exploring a new host, and this book is no different! As always, we also get a full gallery of miniatures including the new units (Unfortunately these kits are not up for order at the same time as this book, but hopefully they will be available soon!) the real start of the show in!
So let’s take a look at what makes the army tick and the basic rules. Units in a battleforged army gain access to some new abilities and restrictions. As we have seen in other past codexes, we have a couple of rules that dictate how the army can be built. First, each detachment can only contain one Chaos Lord, Dark Commune and Daemon Prince. Further on this is the rule that you can not put more Cult than Traitoris Astartes Core Infantry – which unfortunately means you can not make a pure Celt army (However it would not surprise me if we find a way to do this in a narrative book). later down the line).
Codex Supplement: White Scars
Slaves to Darkness means that Khrone Berzerkers, Rubric Marines, Plague Marines and Noise Marines can be taken from the Space Marine Chaos army without breaking the detachment, however they must take the Mark of the Gods and any faction abilities and keywords replaced with those adapted to the new. CSM Codex.
Speaking of Marks of the Gods, each Core unit or non-cultist character added to your army can be given a Mark of Chaos, these cost 15 points each and offer a range of benefits – it’s worth noting that Priests and Psykers also get an additional prayer or power based on the brand too!
Khorne – +1 S in melee attacks if you charge, get charged or Heroically Intervene – if the unit has the Icon keyword they also improve AP in melee attacks by 1.
Nurgle – Subtract 1 from the damage roll of attacks with a strength equal to or at least double your toughness – Essentially make damage at 4+ instead of damage at 5 and damage at 2+ out of the 3 – For units with hit icons hit at 6 auto. hurt their target
Warhammer 40k Space Marine Chapters And Legions
Tzeentch – This is really good, the first unsaved wound each turn takes 0 damage, icon units add 1ap to ranged attacks.
Daemon Engines get a little love and they get a 5+ invulnerable save and also heal a wound back every command phase!
Like the Loyalist Space Marines, the Treyis also get their rapid fire weapons perk in the name of Malicious Volleys – allowing them to be used to full effect whether they are at half range, stationary or on a bike / in terminator weapons. With the recent Dataslate Balance too, all of our Heretic Astartes units get the Armor of Contempt rule also making them reduce their AP effect by 1 – this is massive as it applies to the majority of units in the book including vehicles and Daemon Engines !
Let the Galaxy Burn is a new take on Death of the False Emperor – For starters, this increases the adaption of all flame weapons by 2 (essentially making flamers D6 + 2 hits) and also still generates “exploded hits” on 6s depending on the battle. round and weapon – Battle Round 1 is Wanton Destruction applied to Heavy, Rapid and Grenade, Battle Round 2 is Wanton Massacre applied to Rapid and Pistol, in the 3rd round of the battle you have the option to switch to Wanton Slaughter triggered on Attack. Pistol and Melee, and then in the last 2 rounds of battle Wanton Slaughter applies. There are a couple of abilities in the book that cause units to count as being in different battle rounds for the purposes of this rule.

When creating your army, you can choose one of the 8 Legions – each giving it not only a Legion characteristic and an exclusive Secondary Objective, but also religion-specific cults, warlord characteristics and even stratagem. This makes Chaos Space Marines one of the most varied armies in terms of sub factions in that you get a lot of unique things based on which sub faction you choose. What’s really nice is that units with the Agent of Chaos keyword don’t break these sub-factions, meaning you can happily take Abaddon, Cypher and Fabius Bile in any army!
