Warhammer 40k Space Marine 360 – Back in August, I shared with you my demo impressions of THQ’s third-person shooter, Space Marine. Now it’s time for my full review. While the basics haven’t changed between the demo and the retail version, there’s still a lot to talk about, so rev up your chainsword and get ready to dive into a detailed world of the distant, distant future.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Space Marine is set in the world of Warhammer 40,000. It was originally a board game set in a cold, dark future where humanity has become a ruthless war machine bent on spreading the glory of its Patriarch throughout universe. Of course, he meets resistance from other armies, but here only the green-skinned orcs come into play.

The main core of the Imperium of the God-Emperor of Mankind is the various Space Marine Chapters; a group of genetically and mechanically enhanced super-soldiers, the most iconic of which are the Ultramines. A single squad of Space Marines is a force to be reckoned with, and a squad of thousands of Marines is virtually unstoppable. As the player, you take on the shining blue mantle of Captain Titus and his band of men as they attempt to recapture the Forge World from the invading Orcs.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine Review

The combat is simple but effective. Ranged weapons use the standard right trigger control and are available in a variety of variants, from the standard bolt pistol to the more exotic laser and plasma rifles, as well as the Vengeance launcher and several bolter variants. Melee combat can be mixed in with a quick press of X, and any sharp weapon of destruction you wield will collide with anything in its path. While the standard chainsword is fast and effective, I prefer the slower version of the Thunder Hammer. The satisfying crunch as it lands on an enemy never fails to make me smile.

Instead of regenerative health, the Space Marine chooses a proactive system. Enemies can be stunned with a special attack by pressing Y. A stunned good captain can get up close and personal, delivering a terrifying finishing move that also restores varying amounts of health depending on the enemy. Mastering this mix of shooting and slashing requires tactical thinking. Gaining health by destroying enemies exposes you to additional damage.

I enjoyed this story as I am a huge fan of Warhammer 40,000. To already be able to take up the mantle of the classic foot soldiers of the Imperium of Man was a brilliant achievement. A lot of effort has been put into making sure every aspect of the game fits into this often complex universe. Seeing Titan in all its massive glory for the first time brought a smile to my face, and there are enough twists and turns to keep a dedicated fan watching to see what happens next. I enjoy long campaigns – don’t get me wrong – but while the combat is fun, it soon starts to get boring. This won’t be a problem for a die-hard Warhammer 40,000 fan with a horde of collectibles to complement the lore, but those new to the universe may find themselves lacking motivation.

Outside of the campaign, players have access to two multiplayer modes. Annihilation pits the Space Marines against their more corrupt counterparts, the Chaos Marines, in an apparent showdown where the first team to score 40 kills is crowned victorious. Seize Ground pits two factions against each other in an attempt to capture and hold multiple points on the map. The longer a position is held, the more points a team gets, and the first team to reach 1000 points wins.

I don’t like multiplayer at all. I think most games have the balance wrong, and that’s not my offense. Space Marine does everything right, if you have the skills you can get the kills. Other than a few perks and slightly different weaponry, there is nothing that makes a level 40 Marine character any better. If you know how to use your weapon, you will have no problems with it.

My favorite part of multiplayer isn’t the levels or whacking your opponent’s head with a thunder hammer. The real draw for me is the customization menu with multiple chapters of Space Marines in the universe, each with their own colors and standards. If I stuck to just the Ultramarines, it would be a disappointment for a 40k fan like me. Luckily, Relic doesn’t disappoint. Each faction has access to the decorations of some of the most famous orders and squads in the universe. The opportunity to create a Chaos Marine as one of the Emperor’s Children or my Space Marine as a Black Templar pleased me. Points are earned in matches for kills and point captures, and each weapon also has a series of challenges that can be completed to unlock special armor.

Space Marine does its best to be an exciting adventure in what is generally considered a nerd’s universe. The ongoing action tries to be the core of the Titus experience, and while fans of the universe may enjoy its references and backstory, those who don’t may be left a little empty. Long campaigns and dark environments with enough combat to make your trigger finger fall off may set the stage for a dystopian future, but it doesn’t translate well as an entertaining experience for everyone.

Despite all this, it does have some really great moments. Jumping with a jump pack or fighting demons on top of a walking titan is fun, whether you’re a fan of the franchise or not. If yes, then go and buy it right now! If not? Wait until the price drops a bit and then give it a try. You never know if you might like him.
