Although a winter 2023 date has been set for some time now, with no specific month announced yet, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Space Marine 2’s release date pushed back to 2024.
Since we’ve seen technical issues at launch derail the release of big games like Payday 3, we’d love for the developers at Saber Interactive to spend more time ensuring the best possible experience at launch.

Space Marine 2 is a current-gen exclusive, meaning you won’t be able to play it on Xbox One or PS4.
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 Gameplay Is Very Gears Of War
So far, Focus Entertainment has released three big trailers for Space Marine 2, the first of which was shown at The Game Awards 2021. It shows almost no gameplay but still gives viewers a good indication of what to expect.
The second trailer, shown at The Game Awards 2022, gives fans their first real look at what Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 has to offer. It is important to note that ‘Alpha footage – subject to change’ is marked at the bottom of the watermark, meaning that what is seen may not end up in the final game.
During Summer Game Fest in June 2023, a third trailer was revealed giving us our first look at Space Marine 2’s co-op mode. The 90-second video flashes between weapons, ships and the galactic war with alternating gameplay and cinematic footage.
Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 is expected to play similarly to its predecessor, meaning the game will be a strong mix of third-person shooter and hack-n-slasher. Players will take on the role of Lieutenant Titus from Ultramarines Episode 2, a genetically augmented transhuman soldier who fights for the Imperium of Man against his enemies, be it the mutant, the heretic, and in this case, the alien.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Revealed With An Epic Trailer
We can expect to see Tyranids as the main enemy, an extragalactic race of insectoid aliens. In many ways similar to the Orks players faced in the original Warhammer 40k Space Marine game, Tyranid battle tactics are based on superior numbers in close combat, and from the trailer it looks like we can expect to see this translated into gameplay.
In order to overcome the enemy, you will use an arsenal suitable only for a Space Marine. At range you’ll use weapons like the Boltgun, a weapon that fires self-propelled .75 caliber bolts that explode on impact with their target. Other weapons seen in the trailer include the meltagun and bolt gun.
When enemies get too close it’s time to switch to close combat, and Space Marines 2 has you covered with its selection of melee weapons like the Thunder Hammer, Power Sword and the iconic Chain Sword; A sword with a chainsaw-like blade at the end.
From the trailers, we can assume that Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 takes place sometime after the first Warhammer 40k: Space Marine game.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Skimps On New Gameplay, But Not On Teasing The Future
We know that Lt. Titus, a former captain, was demoted following the events of the first game, where he was taken into custody by Inquisitor Thrax on suspicion of being a traitor and in league with the forces of Chaos. We also know that Titus is now wearing a new suit of Mark X Power Armor, which is mostly worn by Primaris Space Marines.
The story takes place across two planets during the Fourth Tyrannical War, and shows Titus faster and stronger after crossing the Rubicon Primaris. This surgery improves the space soldiers, meaning he will be the powerhouse.

It’s finally coming! It’s been a long, long time coming, but Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is on the way. No fixed release yet, other than 2023 only, here’s the latest trailer shown to us at The Game Awards:
The news that the 2011 action film Space Marine is getting a sequel was the biggest surprise of The Game Awards 2021, to say the least. Captain Titus’ debut didn’t break sales records, nor did it garner insanely high critical review scores. It passed many by, but for those devout enough, it was a blast.
With development duties handed over to Saber Interactive (World War Z, Crysis remasters, SnowRunner) and published by Focus Entertainment (A Plague Tale series, Evil West), it’s safe to say it’s in good hands.
But what happens in Space Marine 2? Does it pick up where we left off, or is this a whole new chapter in the space marine codex? Let’s take a look at what we know so far, and beware of spoilers for the first game:

Captain Titus, originally voiced by actor Mark Strong (of Rock ‘n’ Roll fame), was the protagonist in the first game. Titus and his two fellow Ultramarines from Chapter Two led the charge against the Orc invasion of Forge World Graia.
Despite defeating the Chaos Lord Nemrut, the driving force behind the invasion, Titus was “betrayed” as such by his battle brother Leandros for displaying immunity to the Warp (the driving force behind Chaos). At the end of the first game we see Titus under the custody of an Inquisitor, to determine if Titus is corrupted or something worse.
Fortunately for him, and luckily for him, the trailer marks his return, presumably clear of any wrongdoing in the eyes of the Inquisition. Unfortunately, Mark Strong does not return to the role, and Titus’ experience causes him to be demoted to the rank of lieutenant.
The first game pulled a switch on us, initially throwing an Orc invasion as the main objective of the Ultramarines. However, this turned out to be the aforementioned Nemrut’s pulling the strings, a diversion for them to try to harness the Warp energy.

This time, it’s the Warhammer universe’s take on the Alien franchise…that’s right, alien. A hive-like creature, Tyranids attack in swarms and colonize planets en masse. Echoing the feelings of the old school Space Hulk, will there be a secondary antagonist this time around, or something bigger at play? With Saber’s skill in World War Z, it will be interesting to see hordes of Tyranids on screen at once.
While most third-person shooters treat melee combat as a secondary attack, Space Marine was different. He combined the two seamlessly, with her able to get deep into him with a chainsword before switching to a bolter on the fly.
Space Marine 2 looks to retain that gameplay. The trailer shows the lieutenant jamming right into the fray, slashing aliens and landing headshots like it’s nothing. Well, he had a whole game before him and years of intense, superhuman training to succeed at this sort of thing.
I’ll just come right out and say it: Space Marine 2 looks beautiful. Granted, I thought the first one looked good, so it could only go up from there. And by the looks of it, it has. Yes, we shouldn’t take early footage as sacred, but I do believe in conveying an opinion (in keeping with the marine space religion theme).

The caveat seems to be that so far, it’s only listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X and of course, PC. No listings for PS4, Xbox One or even Nintendo Switch. It might be ported one day, but nowadays we have to accept that those older generation ports will start to die out as games evolve for the better.
