Obtaining a visa can be one of the more time-consuming and complicated aspects of travel. Rules often depend on where you want to go, how you get there and where you come from. Turning to the Internet for help often turns up outdated, incomplete or – worst of all – incorrect information that makes the whole process even more frustrating.

Figuring out how to apply for a Vietnam visa was no different. Google search results were filled with dubious-looking agency websites offering to take care of the entire visa process for cash. We were lost in the jungle of Visayas and didn’t know how to get out.

Depending on your travel plans, you can choose between a single or multiple entry tourist visa with a validity of one or three months.
We opted for the 3-month single-entry visa because we were planning to focus primarily on Vietnam and didn’t want to travel to another country during that time.
If you are going to Vietnam by land, sea or want to get a visa before you arrive in the country, you can apply at a Vietnamese embassy in your country. This process takes 2-5 working days and you will be asked to mail the passport or apply in person.
Visa On Arrival: Do I Need A Visa To Visit Vietnam?
If you are planning to fly, the easiest and fastest option is to apply online for a visa on arrival.
As of 2017, citizens of 40 countries can apply online for a 1-month single entry to Vietnam. It costs $25 and takes 3 business days. You can apply for your e-Visa here. At the end of your application you will be provided with a code which you will need to use to print your visa. None of us have tried this method of applying and we don’t know how fast the process is.
Before you can enter Vietnam and apply for a visa on arrival, you must purchase an approval letter. This allows you to enter the country without a visa and confirms that you will receive a visa upon arrival in Vietnam.
This is important because airlines will not let you board the plane if you cannot provide proof that you are allowed to enter the desired country.
Vietnam 5 Year Visa Exemption
There are many agencies that you can use to get an approval letter for a visa on arrival in Vietnam. We finally chose to go with Vietnam-Visa.com and had a great experience.
They usually process your approval letter within 2 business days, but there are options available for those who need faster processing. All you need to do is fill out a very simple form and then pay the fee via PayPal or credit card.
Prices range from $21 to $34 (at the airport + $25 stamping fee), depending on the type of visa, number of people applying and if you choose additional services. We chose the cheapest option and received our approval letters within 2 working days as promised. There are cheaper options in the market. We shopped around a bit and thought other agencies didn’t seem as reliable and secure.
The only thing we didn’t know or like was that our names, our passport details and date of birth were in line with ten other applicants.

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, notorious for its overcrowded airport and long queues at immigration stands. If you don’t want to risk spending too much time at the counter after flying for several hours, Vietnam-Visa.com offers an expedited option to get you through immigration faster.
We decided not to use fast track and were very happy to find only a few people at the visa on arrival counter at 9pm. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes.
