Yagovi was speeding eastbound in the westbound lanes around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Shoreline Drive in a Chevrolet Bolt when it ran a red light and collided with several people walking in the intersection, police said. He also crashed into several occupied vehicles without slowing near Aquarium Way, according to police.
Romelia Quarante Aguilar, 60, of Long Beach, died at the scene. Witnesses said she was hit by a boy pushing a stroller in the crosswalk.

“It was just horrible,” one witness told NBCLA. “So, we just started, me and a few other people, we just started praying for her. There was a young man who just started shouting and running towards her, just shouting, ‘No’, and everything was just chaotic.”
Aguilar’s family said she was in the area to attend a Halloween event. She stopped by a food truck where her brother worked.
“I want justice for what happened. There was no reason for my sister to die such a tragic death,” said Juan Carlos Cuarante, Romelia Aguilar Cuarante’s brother.

Yagovi stayed there and was hospitalized. He was then arrested and booked into the Long Beach Jail. Although he was initially charged with murder, he was charged yesterday with the lesser charge of vehicular manslaughter.
Yagovi’s driver’s access to the platform was removed when the accident was reported to Uber, the company said.
“We are overwhelmed by the details of this unimaginable tragedy,” Uber said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Romelia Aguilar’s loved ones during this painful time, and we hope all the injured make a speedy recovery. SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) – An Uber driver was killed and a passenger critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in South Los Angeles early Saturday, and police were searching for the suspects who were exposed on foot.
Police said a vehicle collided with a parked car near the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 3:30 a.m.
Authorities said a black Honda was traveling north on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when it collided with a silver sedan near Arlington Avenue.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found two women trapped in one of the vehicles, which had an Uber sticker and a Lyft sticker on the windshield. The jaws of life were used to free the victims.
The passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition and the unidentified driver, who police later confirmed worked for Uber, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said that two suspects got out of the second vehicle and fled the scene after the crash. One witness said he saw the two men running away in the opposite direction of the crash on Arlington Boulevard.
Police investigated the suspect car and the scene. The cause of the crash was not yet known. A “ghost tire memorial” has been placed at the South Los Angeles intersection where three young women riding in an Uber were killed in a high-speed accident.

Gregory Black, the 31-year-old driver who ran through the intersection, was charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter.
The memorial was established by Streets for All, a non-profit traffic safety group that seeks to end traffic fatalities, and Faith in Safe Streets, the faith-based coalition formed by the group, which focuses on the hardest-hit areas of South Los Angeles.
The crash happened around 5:25 a.m. Saturday at Vermont Boulevard and Century Boulevard, several blocks west of the Harbor Freeway (110).
According to police, Black was driving a Mercedes Benz northbound on Vermont Boulevard at speeds approaching 100 mph in a 35 mph zone when he ran a red light and collided with an Uber with five people inside.

23-year-old Joblan Arroyo, of San Juan Capistrano; 23-year-old Veronica Amzola of Santa Ana; and Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, all of Santa Ana, were killed in the crash. Everyone would ride in an Uber vehicle.
Izquierdo and Amzola were sisters, and had been friends with Arroyo since childhood, relatives wrote on GoFundMe pages set up on behalf of both families.
The Uber driver, a 38-year-old woman, and a male passenger both suffered minor injuries from the crash and are expected to survive.
Black was charged Tuesday with three counts of vehicular homicide, according to police and court records. He pleaded not guilty at his stand in Compton court on Aug. 29 and is due back in court on Tuesday, Aug. 5, when a hearing will be scheduled to determine if there is enough evidence for him to stand trial.

Los Angeles Police Department Detective Ryan Moreno said the crash remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Black, known as a “gang member with 11 prior arrests,” was serving five years of probation for attempted murder at the time of the collision, LAPD Det. Moreno said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Moreno said he is committed to ensuring that people who speed and cause fatal traffic collisions go to jail.
“It doesn’t bring back the victims. These families are suffering now. One of the families, they are preparing for two funerals, both of their daughters,” Moreno said.

Moreno said there have been a large number of high-speed crashes in the area in recent weeks, and said there have been 70 traffic-related fatalities during the LAPD’s South Traffic Division this year.
The two groups that organized the memorial also emphasized the need to address speeding by re-engineering streets to force drivers to drive at safer speeds. They are also urging the Legislature to pass House Bill 645, which would create a pilot program in six California cities to install speed cameras, with priority around schools, high-injury networks and known street racing corridors.
According to Damian Quit, executive director of Streets for All, speed cameras are in use in more than 150 cities across the country and have a proven track record of reducing crashes and fatalities. AB 645 is awaiting review in the Senate Appropriations Committee. According to Quit’s organization, Los Angeles Les saw a record 312 fatalities in 2022 and speed has been the biggest factor in traffic collisions every year since before 2011. According to LAPD data, there were 194 fatalities in 2023 as of August 12.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of Juvelyn Arroyo’s family had raised more than $16,000 as of Thursday afternoon. A page on behalf of Izquierdo’s family and Amazola’s family raised more than $38,000.
