The Jeep Renegade certainly isn’t a Jeep as much as the first car, but it’s the first to prove that Jeep style and playability can successfully translate into a subcompact crossover. Driving is useful, but still practical.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk Off Road Review

2016 Jeep Renegade Sport 4dr SUV (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with 55% city and 45% highway) and energy ratings. $4.39 per gallon for an undisclosed premium in North Dakota.

When the Renegade debuted last year, some Jeep enthusiasts and critics worried whether or not the subcompact crossover could wear the manufacturer’s badge based on its reputation for off-road prowess. Jeep’s track record of building small crossovers (see the Compass and Patriot) undoubtedly contributed. But with several road tests under our belts and a long-term Renegade Trailhawk in our fleet, we can happily report that those fears are unfounded. The 2016 Jeep Renegade is a great subcompact crossover that handles well, is easy to drive, and can outrun the competition when off-road.

On the road is the uniquely decorated Renegade. The suspension does a great job of soaking up decent bumps and potholes. Jeep’s in-dash infotainment system is housed in an attractive cabin that features plenty of room front and center. The ride quality of the Trailhawk version is a bit rougher and bumpier, but to compensate, it offers off-road abilities that are unmatched in this segment and even in the compact crossover market. Indeed, when we put the Trailhawk on our RTI ramp (designed to measure maximum suspension articulation), we found it handled better than the Cherokee Trailhawk and Land Rover Discovery Sport. Part of that is due to the Renegade’s small footprint, making it easy to park on the road, cruising tight streets, or parking in a crowded parking lot.

If you’re looking for a solid subcompact crossover, there are a few things that keep the Renegade at the top of its class. Neither of the two engines available is particularly impressive. The base turbocharged four-cylinder is good, but only paired with a manual transmission, while the larger 2.4-liter engine has average acceleration and average fuel economy. Inside, second-row room is at a premium and should be reserved for short trips to avoid tiring out your passengers. A small cargo area further diminishes the Renegade’s capacity as an all-terrain vehicle for people and cargo.

The subcompact market is heating up, with new entrants arriving every year. We love the 2016 Mazda CX-3. It’s a fun, sporty alternative with one of the most powerful engines in its class. The Nissan Juke is similarly light-footed and powerful, but the interior is less spacious. In contrast, the 2016 Honda HR-V is easier to live with thanks to its versatile cargo space, but it’s not as sporty. There’s also the 2016 Fiat 500X, which is mechanically related to the Renegade and therefore shares pros and cons, or the larger 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, which is the only vehicle among rivals that offers off-road capabilities.

It’s a diverse group, sure, but if fun and true off-road capability are high on your wish list, the 2016 Jeep Renegade could be appealing.

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is offered with one of two available engines. The base engine, standard on Sport and Space models, is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder producing 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

Optional for Sport and Space and standard on Limited and Trailhawk models is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Renegades can be had with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, except for the Trailhawk, which is 4WD only.

In testing, a Jeep Renegade Latitude with 4WD and a 2.4-liter engine went from zero to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, about average for a subcompact crossover. The nearly 200-pound Renegade Trailhawk recorded an average acceleration time of 9.7 seconds based on two different test vehicles.

EPA estimated fuel economy hasn’t been released for the 2016 Jeep Renegade, but we don’t expect the numbers to change much from last year. With its turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, the Renegade achieves a combined (24/31) fuel economy of 27 mpg in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The front-wheel drive 2.4-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg (22 city/31 highway); four-wheel drive gets 24 mpg combined (21/29). That’s true even though most of its competitors offer better fuel economy.

All 4WD Renegades have selectable drive modes for different terrains. The Renegade Trailhawk has a lower 4WD system, improved low-speed off-road gear and an optional drive mode.

When equipped with the Trailer Tow Package, the Renegade with 4WD and the 2.4-liter engine can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

The 2016 Jeep Renegade comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, driver’s knee airbag, frontal airbag, side curtain airbag and hill start assist. A rear camera is standard on Sport and other trims. There are two safety-focused packages that add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and rear parking assist.

In our brake test, the Jeep Renegade Latitude stopped in 116 feet from 60 mph, which is excellent for its class. The Renegade Trailhawk needed 135 feet longer to stop from 60 mph, mainly because of its specialized tires.

Both 2016 Jeep Renegade engines make similar power, so your choice depends on what character and transmission you want. The 1.4 delivers its power more smoothly, feels sportier and comes with easy handling. By comparison, the 2.4-litre engine feels and sounds stronger under hard acceleration, but the stronger low-rpm torque means it’s more powerful and responsive from a standstill or at low speeds. The nine-speed automatic transmission is smooth and keeps the engine revs low for maximum highway mpg, but can also make short gear changes at low speeds (like stuck in a car) along with slow highway downshifts.

The Renegade’s drivetrain is largely solved by a suspension setup. The front-wheel-drive versions sit the lowest and are therefore the sportiest. In fact, the Renegade’s compact size and quick, direct steering make front-drive versions feel more like a car. All-wheel-drive models sit an inch higher, while the Trailhawk adds another 0.8 inches to the height. This contributes to body roll and some ride, but the Renegade never feels unstable or rough. The added height gives the Renegade true off-road capability. The Trailhawk is an obvious choice for off-roading, as unique front and rear fascias improve approach and departure angles, skid plates protect vehicle traffic, and all-terrain tires save space.

It may be an entry-level Jeep, but the Renegade doesn’t feel like one from the driver’s seat. While the bare-bones Sport lacks air conditioning and cruise control, most Renegades are very well equipped and feature soft-touch materials for the dash and armrests. Jeep has added character to the Renegade’s interior with a sprinkling of Jeep-themed logos and designs.

The Uconnect system is better than most data systems. The updated 6.5-inch touchscreen is impressive and feature-rich. It also offers access to Yelp local search and Uconnect Access apps on owners’ smartphones. Uconnect Access offers text-to-speech and speech-to-text, both of which work very well, plus remote lock and start and a WiFi hotspot for an extra charge. The Limited model also comes with an attractive display in the instrument cluster that displays advanced computer information.

Although the Renegade is short, it is very spacious for its size, providing useful interior space for passengers and cargo. The upright design provides plenty of room, with plenty of room in the front seats. Room is tight for rear passengers, but a three-seater is possible thanks to the extraordinary width. Rear cargo space offers 50.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down and 18.5 cubic feet with the seats up. Those numbers beat the Chevrolet Trax, but they are
