After an 18-year-old was one of four people killed in a violent crash involving a Tesla in Martin County on Tuesday, a father is sharing his story of pain.

George Meyer II said his son, George III, was the driver of the Tesla that collided with the van at the intersection of South Federal Highway and Northwest Baker Road in Stuart.

“One of my subcontractors called me, his name is John. He said ‘George,’ and I said, ‘Hey John, what’s going on?’ And he said ‘Where’s Georgie?'” Meyer told NBC affiliate WPTV-TV.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash occurred when the Chrysler minivan made a left turn in front of the Tesla, causing the vehicles to collide. The Tesla overturned and caught fire.

“So I start calling George and he doesn’t answer and I call and call the phone and start panicking,” Meyer said. “And I text him, but I didn’t know he was already dead, he was already dead.”

Meyer III was killed in the wreck while the female passenger, who has not been identified, died at a hospital. Both the driver and passenger in the van were killed.

“He knows I love him and that’s what I would tell him. I’ll never be able to get over this. He was like my best friend,” Meyer said.

Meyer II said his son recently graduated from high school and is attending a local college to become a cardiologist. He leaves behind his parents and younger sister.

“I was so proud of him, man. I was always proud of that kid, that kid was the new and improved George Meyer, you know,” Meyer said.

The fifth fatal traffic accident in just over two years on a stretch of Peninsula Boulevard in Woodmere has Melanie Kail again calling for measures to reduce traffic, especially on the stretch of roadway where the latest crash occurred.

Last Saturday at 10:58 p.m., at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Edward Avenue, a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was traveling north on Peninsula Boulevard when it collided with a white 2018 Audi Q5 SUV that was turning south on Peninsula, she said the police.

All five people in the Audi SUV were transported to a local hospital. At 11:45 p.m., Liel Namdar, 15, a second-grader at Torah Academy for Girls in Far Rockaway, was pronounced dead by a hospital staff physician, according to police. 38-year-old Miriam Meltser, the driver of the Audi, was seriously injured. Her daughter Aliza and two other girls suffered minor injuries, officials said.

“The tragedy that happened this weekend shook the community,” said Kail, a member of the Woodmere Fire Department and fire district commissioner. “When I first published that petition almost two years ago, it was as a result of a terrible accident involving a pedestrian. The accident happened on the same corner as this weekend’s tragedy – a corner where I’ve seen too many horrific accidents as an active firefighter in this district.”

On Sept. 1, Woodmere resident Tobias Levkovich, a pedestrian, was killed when he was struck by a car while crossing Peninsula Boulevard between Island and Longacre avenues, near Young Israel of Woodmere. On February 21, 2020, a man was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Lafayette Drive and Peninsula.

On November 19, 2019, Queens Village resident Keith Bailey, a passenger in a pickup truck, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Peninsula.

Teen Charged As An Adult In Lincoln County Crash That Killed 3 Students

Another Woodmere resident, Stewart Hecht, was killed on December 31, 2019, when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Edward Avenue and Peninsula. After Hecht’s death, Kail started an online petition calling for traffic signals at that intersection to reduce the likelihood of accidents and increase pedestrian safety. As of press time, more than 10,500 people have signed it.

“I’m asking our county and state representation to conduct an immediate review,” Kail said. “The first step is to potentially approve a temporary No Left Turn sign while further investigation and research is conducted on the best approach to mitigating the dangerous conditions without unduly disrupting traffic.”

After the latest incident, Arlin Javier Aguilera, 34, of Washington Avenue in West Hempstead, was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated. Aguilera was brought to court on Sunday. His next court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday, as the Herald went to press. Bail is set at $200,000 or $100,000 cash. He did not have an attorney at press time.

After the accident, Torah Academy for Girls officials issued a statement: “It is with broken hearts and anguish that we have to share with you that one of our 10th graders, Liel Namdar, was tragically nifteres (passed away) in a car accident last night. “

Far Rockaway School was open Sunday night for second graders and other students. Zahava Farbman, a social worker with 25 years of experience in crisis intervention, trauma and bereavement, assists the school.

On Monday night, more than 100 people joined a Zoom call where Farbman answered questions. Namdar, a Great Neck resident who, along with the other girls, was returning from a reunion at Sternberg Summer Camp when she was killed, had friends throughout the metropolitan area.

During the Q&A, Farbman emphasized that it was early in the grieving process and that it was natural for people to have feelings ranging from overwhelming grief to loss to guilt. “Having Liel in our lives and losing Liel will never go away,” she said. “You will find a way to keep her in your life.”

Farbman responded to a person who said she felt like she was “buried under a ton of bricks” by saying, “Stay under that ton of bricks, and then let yourself go.”

“It’s completely normal at this point to have no appetite, no sleep, and no ability to focus,” Farbman said, “It’s okay to not be well.” Comparing the pain of grieving to sewing stitches to close a wound, she said, “Every day it hurts less,” admitting that it’s too early in the grieving process to take that advice.

Summer camp directors Dov and Allyson Perkal also released a statement on Namdar’s death, which read in part: “The Sternberg [Camp] community is always a family and as such, while we usually laugh and sing together, unfortunately, sometimes we have to cry together. We are very sorry to have to share such terrible news.”

In the video, Namdar’s father, Ephraim, spoke about his daughter, whose funeral was held on Monday at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. “My Liel, she was special,” he said. “She always had a smile, her smile was contagious. She would walk into the room and I could literally feel her light up. She had a heart that was so compassionate. She took care of everything.”
