When you think of your favorite places to be in the world, your car to work probably isn’t one of them. But what if that is the case? Optimizing your car’s sound system can mean the difference between your commute to work and the stereo playing on your dashboard. After all, American drivers spend more than 17,600 minutes in their cars every year. That’s about 300 hours. All that time you spend in the car, it can be enhanced even more with a car stereo that sounds as good as it does at home. How to tell if your car’s audio needs to be upgraded If you’re thinking about upgrading your car’s audio, there are a few things to keep in mind. And it all starts where the weakest part of the system is. Not enough volume? Need a solid bass response? Finding weaknesses helps you develop a plan of action.
A new car? Do a turn-it-up test. You just bought a new car or truck – and you love it. It smells great, it looks great, it drives like a dream…and not a single M&M or fry-fry escapes under the seat. (Anyway.) Awesome, congratulations. Now, get in the driver’s seat and play the stereo. Noise. Like ALL THE WAY UP THE LAYER. Assuming that you have done this, two things: 1) We are not here to bother you or tell you anything that you do not know, such as the sound of your new car is very lacking, and 2) you are not alone. . The truth is, every new car and truck comes with an audio system that isn’t very impressive (even premium audio equipment can be upgraded, believe it or not). The good news: upgrading your car’s audio system doesn’t have to be expensive or require ruining your OEM’s clean look. More on that in a moment.

Start with better speakers. (It’s Easy.) It can be a little intimidating when shopping for new car speakers, especially if you don’t know what you want. There are many types of speakers and factors to consider: models, materials, sizes, features, prices… the list goes on. In general, you will want to focus on the things that are most important to you. Does it make sense? Is it a price? Is it the size? While we recommend talking to a professional, here’s an overview of things you’ll want to know before upgrading your car speakers. Choose the right size speaker to fit your car. There are many car speaker size options to choose from. If you want to keep your car’s OEM look, then you want to replace your existing speakers with speakers of the same size. (Have 6.5″ speakers in the front doors of your Honda Civic? Get 6.5″ speakers to replace them.) Not sure what size speakers you have? Measure the speaker only at its widest points. Once you have the dimensions of your speaker, find the size you need by comparing it to the available speaker sizes. The size of the round speakers can be 3-1/2”, 4”, 5-1/4”, 6-1/2”, or 8”. The size of oval speakers can be 4×6″, 4×10″, 5×7″/6×8″, or 6×9″.

Stick to your car speaker style now. Before you start looking for new car speakers, you’ll want to know if your current speaker is composite or coaxial. Depending on which one you currently have, you’ll want to keep it intact when buying new speakers. Many newer cars (as well as cars older than 2000) have component-type speakers (like the Kicker 47KSS6504 speaker system below) installed in the front. The component speakers have separate external tweeters and accompanying mid-bass drivers.
Another commonly seen style is the coaxial speaker system (like this Focal 165AC speaker below). These speakers have built-in tweeters and mid-bass drivers for an all-in-one package solution. You usually see them on the backs of newer cars and trucks, but some are found on the front and rear doors of older cars.
Are you looking for a two or three car speaker? Words like “2-way” or “3-way” describe two or three drivers that make up each speaker. Drivers can include things like woofers, tweeters, mid-range drivers, and/or super-tweeters. Many people choose to replace the car speaker with a similar (but obviously higher) speaker. In other words: you can replace your car’s current speakers with better speakers designed to fit in the same areas. When it comes to car speaker hardware specs, here’s what to look for: Power handling : There are a lot of variables here, but look for continuous power handling (or RMS ). Make sure your power source (whether it’s a car radio or an amplifier) has enough juice to properly power the speakers. Try to find the closest match you can, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Sensitivity : This is how to measure the sensitivity of a car speaker. Speakers rated at 90dB or higher require less power to operate properly. Any sound level below 90dB needs more juice, and you may want to consider getting a car amplifier to get the power they desire. Mounting depth : This refers to how much space the speaker will take up when installed in your vehicle. You can always add spacers or expansion brackets to hold almost any car door speaker. But if you don’t want to, measure the mounting depth of your current speakers and make sure the new ones have the same or lower depth. To determine the depth of amplification, simply try to go from the back of the amplifier (the metal ring around the speaker itself, where the holes are) to the tip of the speaker.
