I’m thinking you should go to American Freight (formerly Sears Outlet). This directory site consistently offers some of the best deals out there. This is the place where used and refurbished items are sold at huge discounts.

When you arrive at the site, expect to find every Toothed Washer Sears has for sale when you need it, available at American Freight stores across the country.

I found American Cargo to be a great learning site. It’s amazing how many models each device manufacturer has and what their suggested retail price is before they ship out. Outlet items are new or refurbished, and will be 50 percent off.

You can study the specifications of each device and find customer reviews for many items. I’m sometimes wary of reviews on this site because, as you can tell, some people say the device is broken or scratched – because they got a lot of use out of it. So keep your common sense handy as you research.

I love being able to see and learn what’s wrong with each item. Often these exceptions are simply cosmetic, such as dents or scratches. You can find out what it means to buy a “refurbished” device with a manufacturer’s warranty. Then check the item’s store location, how to pick it up if you’re local, or what the shipping charges will be if you have to go that way. Watch things change fast every day.

I bought a clothes dryer from American Truck (then Sears Outlet) six years ago. Coming from Ohio, it arrived in a big truck with no boxes – just the stuff and plastic wrap. It did not have an owner’s manual. And I didn’t care. The dryer was exactly as shown on the site with a large scratch on the side; $557 with shipping, as opposed to the regular retail price of $1,100. I downloaded the manual from the manufacturer’s website and it was brand new to me with a full manufacturer’s warranty. If set next to the corresponding washer, the scratch disappears.

Our big trip to Colorado last year turned out to be a learning experience with Whirlpool appliances. In our new home, we inherited a gas range, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer – all Whirlpool Gold and a 12-year-old. I was fully planning to replace all of these devices, but after a week of using them, I quickly changed my mind. It helps to take good care of them. Still, in this day and age, 12 years would be outdated for most furniture. Washer and dryer sets are fantastic workhorses. They have no digital displays, just your basic settings. I couldn’t be happier with all the tools.

When looking at washers, I recommend sticking with a heavy-duty, large-capacity GE, Whirlpool, or Maytag. You will find many options and choices at your local American Freight store.

Don’t go with Samsung products. You will regret this till the day you die. Samsung devices in general are notoriously expensive to repair in my opinion, if you can get someone to work on them.

Remember, the fewer electronic and digital bells and whistles a washer has, the cheaper it will be to maintain over the years, because you have fewer expensive options to break.

A top-loading sink without the stirrer would be my first choice. However, a front loader will save you a lot of water. Be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and sanitizing the front loader drum (or “basket”) at least monthly. The goal is to prevent mold from growing in the gas, which can be a problem with some front-load washers.
