Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Premium – With so many versions to choose from, we thought a Ranger comparison would shed some light on which model is right for you. The Polaris Ranger series has been the driving force behind the company’s recreational vehicle sales. When Polaris first released the Ranger XP 1000, it continued to sell the Ranger XP 900, the machine the 1000 evolved from. The XP 900 was the company’s best seller, and there was no reason to mess with it. Even when Polaris updated the Ranger XP 1000 in 2018, the new machine was joined in the lineup by the acclaimed Ranger XP 900. Now, though, the Ranger 1000 (no XP in the name) has finally evolved and is replacing the Ranger XP 900. Polaris fully intends to sell both in the line, and it’s confusing, since they’re very similar now, and there’s a $1,900 difference among our test equipment. Both are Premium models, meaning they have EPS, cast-aluminum wheels and upgraded seats. The price difference can be quite large if you choose the base model Ranger 1000 without EPS or good wheels.
For hard or slow driving or normal tasks and work, you won’t notice much difference between these two Rangers. When you’re out on the mountain with two tracks, the Ranger XP 1000 has clear power, suspension and fun benefits.
Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Premium
For 2018 the three-seater Ranger XP 1000 was the only one to receive a new rigid one-piece frame, updated styling and bodywork, and performance changes. A number of changes made the Ranger XP 1000 stronger for work, but also more refined, so it became a better companion for play and recreation.

Running the muffler on the side of the Ranger XP 1000 cleans up the look of the rear. The Ranger 1000 has a rear muffler. The bed works well.
Both machines have a 25 percent stiffer frame that was a big deal when they were released, and feature fully enclosed busses and chassis to aid performance and longevity. The underside of the chassis is almost fully covered with a skid plate close to 50 percent larger than the one that protected the 2017. Areas not covered by the skid plate are closed to prevent the underside of the machine from catching and holding mud. . Protection doesn’t stop at the ski plate. The front of the machine is guarded by a large bumper that Polaris says is the largest in the industry. It includes the entire front lower part of the machine, including the A-arms and steering parts. There is already a winch mount and snowplow attachment bar. You don’t get that big of a bumper on the base model Ranger, but since the two we’re comparing are Premium versions, they both have a big bumper.
Compared to previous Rangers, the Ranger XP 1000 Premium has a better padded seat. The Premium edition of the Ranger 1000 comes with it for convenience.
They share the same modern and contemporary style, but the body parts are not the same, however. The XP 1000 has many areas of body color. You will find a 999cc engine mated to a CVT at the back of both cabins. The drivetrain includes 2WD, 4WD and Turf mode that activates the rear differential to prevent rusting on sensitive surfaces.

Both Rangers turn in easily and are quick, but the steering takes more steering wheel movement than the sportier models. The cushy-riding XP 1000 has more body.
Compared to previous XP 900s models and before the 2018 Ranger XP 1000, both new machines are quieter in the cab with less engine noise. Even with the same trim packages, the Ranger XP 1000 is quieter than the Ranger 1000. The XP’s CVT and engine mount are under the hood, and the Ranger 1000 has a grille-covered intake on the B-pillar behind the cab. In terms of capacity and body size, they both match 1,000 pounds of bed capacity and 2,500 pounds of towing capacity. They also share the same width, overall length and wheelbase. In addition to the regular versions and the High Lifter and NorthStar editions, there are factory-installed upgrade packages: Ride Command, Back Country, Winter Prep, Cab Upgrade and MB Quart Audio Upgrade. Suffice it to say, you can get any Ranger the way you want it.
The new Ranger 1000 Premium and the Ranger XP 1000 Premium (the lowest XP trim level) look very similar. The XP has more body color and larger headrest pads.
Another big difference in the Ranger comparison is that the Ranger 1000 starts at $12,999, which by any measure is a hefty price, even without EPS and cast wheels. The base model also comes with 25-inch wheels. With any of the higher trim versions like our $14,999 Premium, it has 26-inch tires, while all standard versions of the Ranger XP 1000 have 27-inch tires. The lowest priced Ranger XP 1000 is $16,899.
Our New Polaris Inventory
While the Ranger 1000 has 10 inches of wheel travel, the XP 1000 has 11 inches. An extra inch of travel and larger tires on the XP account for a one-inch difference in ground clearance and overall height. Ground clearance is 12 inches for the Ranger 1000 and 13 inches for the Ranger XP 1000.
You will find a big difference in the engine area. Both have the same displacement, but the Ranger 1000 has a single overhead-cam cylinder head designed for low rpm power. Optimizing power down makes for a more efficient work machine, but also lowers in-cab noise levels for work or entertainment. Power output is rated at 61 horsepower and 55 pound-feet of torque. The XP 1000 has a double cam head design, and is good for 82 horsepower and 62 pound-feet of torque. If you’re just working your yard, hauling things, pulling a cart, hauling logs or other general work, you may not even notice the energy difference. The same is true for hard or technical routes.
When you get out and stretch the legs of both machines, the extra 25 percent horsepower is felt even more. Polaris equips the XP 1000 with a three-position switch on the dash: work, general and performance settings. Even the work setting feels zippy compared to the open trail.
Although the suspension is not very new, there have been improvements to the steering in 2018. The 2018 XP 1000 got a sharper turning radius, thanks to a 19 percent tighter steering. The opening radius on both our machines is the same. The steering is quick, but sensitive to speed. We’re not sure if we should credit the speed-sensitive feature or the one-piece frame, but the steering felt firm and the front end was predictable. In all cases the XP 1000 is simply a smooth ride with big tires and great travel.

The interior is spacious and comfortable and easy to get in and out of. The Ranger XP 1000 has open underseat storage and a dual sweep gauge.
Having an 82-horsepower, parallel, twin-cylinder engine means the Ranger XP 1000 has a lot of work to do. It has the clutch ratio Polaris calls the largest in the industry. Polaris took lessons from the RZR Turbo to ensure the belt stays cool, and the cowl belt is borrowed from the RZR Turbo. Until we drove the XP 1000, we had no problems with the power output of the Ranger 1000. With any machine in the Ranger comparison, you can really pull a small camping trailer behind it when you go hunting or camping.
The log was weighed down by the nubs of branches stuck to the ground, but both Rangers dragged it across the farm with ease.
Both machines have three bench seats with seat belts, and the seats are well padded and comfortable. The seats aren’t as firm as the Polaris RZR or General, but you’re not expected to drive the machine like those sports models. The shifter is dash-mounted, and the twin-sweep gauge package from General is used on the Ranger XP, while the Ranger 1000 has a 4-inch LCD display. The dash and interior are well laid out on both machines with cup holders designed to accept cups by the handle. There is the usual one-gallon storage space on the XP 1000, but the main difference is that the Ranger 1000’s bench seat is solid underneath, but the XP 1000 has a large open space under the passenger seat for storage, and the bottom has a molded-in ring suitable for holding a 5-gallon bucket. . It is said to be a good place to ride a dog. We used it as a perfect place for a camera bag.
