The nature and terrain of Montana often demands the ruggedness of a truck. Therefore, many Montanans own cars, especially diesel trucks. That’s why businesses like Gomer’s Diesel Inc. and long-standing USDieselParts.com. In the case of Gomer’s Diesel, a Missoula, MT staple since 1938. What began with a focus on agricultural products, has since transitioned into general diesel maintenance and performance work, as well as the distribution of diesel parts.
Performance Upgrades For 5.9 Cummins
“We are a third-generation company,” said Moe Johnson, a partner at Gomer’s Diesel/USDieselParts.com. “It’s a family business and we do diesel repair all the time – from diesel injection to the distribution of engine parts. We have three locations at once. Well, there’s only one in Missoula, MT.

“I started here in college and never left. I became a partner in 1999, which was around the time the diesel market started to take off. We’ve been changing and going ever since.”
Around 2003 Gomer’s Diesel built its own dealership to allow installation work in the Missoula area. Previously, it was a fuel injection shop, a starter and alternator rebuild house, as well as a warehouse for Federal Mogul, FP Diesel and Mahle/Clevite back in the day.
As Gomer’s Diesel saw the industry change, it also adapted to the new diesel segment and the diesel consumer through its distribution business and retail capabilities.
“We saw the industry shift towards diesel production, so we became a distributor for all the big guys like BD Diesel, ATS, Industrial Injection, Gale Banks, and K&N,” the Johnson said. “We saw the writing on the wall of installing the name of the game and where the future was going, so we also built on the building and turned it into an 8- bay can be installed, repaired and implemented.”

When it comes to the store’s diesel operation, Johnson said Gomer’s is not biased in any way and works on all three major diesel platforms.
“Montana is where we are, we have all kinds of trucks here, so we do Ford, Dodge and Chevy. Those are the ones we rely on the most,” he said. our business is general repair, but we do a reasonable amount of projects. It makes you better on the performance side when you do the repair side as well. It gives you a lot of insight into how diesel fuel injection works and is a real bonus.
Gomer’s Diesel has 15 full-time employees, eight bays, seven elevators and 20, 000 sq.-ft. opportunities, which in addition to doing general repair work and performance, the shop is still building old machinery for some ranchers in the area.
To showcase some of the shop’s models, Gomer’s also operates a drag car and a competition dyno. “Tow truck and dyno truck is for fun and to be a part of the market and to be a part of a good group of people out there that are into these things,” he said. a Johnson.
Keeping Pace, Part 3: 650 700hp 5.9l Common Rail
But one truck with a special engine has helped Gomer’s Diesel 15 years ago to keep the business going. That truck is a white 2004/2005 Dodge with a 5.9L Cummins engine.
“That white Dodge was the beginning of our diesel performance,” Johnson said. “Back in 2004-2005, that was the truck we learned and cut our teeth on. It’s still out there today. The truck has a 5.9L Cummins engine in it, featuring a twin turbo, two fuel injection system that puts out 1,800 horsepower.
The 5.9L Cummins build was tuned and balanced with the help of Diesel Power Parts and Machine in Missoula. The build features an Industrial Injection CNC-ported racing head, an Industrial Injection 14mm Gorilla girdle kit, an Industrial Injection Stage 2 camshaft, as well as Mahle monotherm pistons, Carrillo rods, Fleece Performance rocker bridges, chromoly pushrods, ARP buttons, and Industrial. Injectors King Cobra injectors.
Outside, the 5.9L Cummins has an ATS Aurora twin turbo kit (104mm / 75mm), two Fass 250 gph fuel pumps, an Industrial Injection twin fueler kit (two 12mm XP pumps), a Mishimoto intercooler, the ZZ Fab side load intake manifold , the Fluidampr performance diesel damper, the Nitrous Express dual nitrous kit, and the tuning done by Starlite Diesel.
Cummins No Start? No Problem!
“We’ve got it all installed and set up for dyno events and drag racing,” Johnson said. “It has an ATS racing transmission, BD Diesel portable dual coilovers, BDS rear shock absorbers, Yukon chromoly axle shafts , and Northern Radiator dual fan brushes and covers.”
With all this in one truck and 1,800 horsepower on tap, this 5.9L Dodge Cummins is one hell of a ride!

In the Ultimate Callout Challenge, we had the opportunity to check out a special Duramax L5P machine made by Keith Porter. Porter’s project mixes traditional style with modern technology, and we were lucky enough to find him for an exclusive interview.

Porter’s pride and joy is a 1952 Chevy 3100 pickup truck, a classic ride that has been given a new lease on life. He explained that his signature is to make his projects look like they could be rolled out of the factory the way he built them. But beneath the ’52 Chevy’s classic-styled exterior, there’s a modern powerhouse.
You can always count on Warren Diesel Injection to pull up on the action in a sweet Powerstroke truck – they’ve been redefining the scene for over a decade. We saw this 6.0L in the 2023 Ultimate Callout Challenge and this one is even higher.
Ryan Milliken and Rod MacMaster teamed up to build a diesel powered Corvette to compete in the top PDRA Pro Boost class. Thanks to Freedom Racing Engines and Midgets Diesel Performance, among others, the turbocharged and nitrous-powered 6.8L Cummins engine showed great signs of success. Anyway, it’s back to the drawing board for this Diesel of the Week.
Every year, hundreds of diesel trucks compete in the Ultimate Callout Challenge. As expected, most of the engines are 6.7L Cummins, but that’s what makes the Powerstroke build more special – leaving a 7.3L. We were able to find one built and owned by Corey Hurtts of CNC Fabrication. Check it out!

Did we expect to see a 1962 Ford Country Squire in a big diesel race car? No way. Did we get excited when we saw someone in the 2023 Ultimate Callout Challenge? Hell yes. This one has a beefy 6.0L Powerstroke swap under the hood making it a kickass combo worthy of our Diesel of the Week!
It’s hard to miss Stainless Diesel’s #CancerSucks S10, which features a 5.9L Cummins turbo engine. During the 2023 Ultimate Callout Challenge, we caught up with Steve O’Neal to get the details of this particular truck and the Cummins powerplant for our Diesel of the Week. During the 2023 Ultimate Callout Challenge, the guys from Maverick Diesel were busy in the pit with two different trucks that they brought to Indy. One of those trucks is Mitchell Wicklund’s with a turbocharged 6.7L Cummins engine in it. We spoke to Mitchell about the build done by LinCo Diesel Performance. Look no surprises there. Gale Banks of Banks Power wanted to add more 12-valve options to the company’s extensive line of electric power accessories. “We’ve been planning to do that for a while, but we didn’t have access to a fire,” he said. After acquiring a semi-stock ’96 Dodge with a 12-valve, the Bank’s instructions were given: continuous testing and documentation so that you can improve what you offer with solid data. The overall approach was straightforward, but the specifics were more involved, requiring many different combinations of components. It is not possible to cover all the variables considered, so we will focus only on the before/after. Remember that since this application is primarily used for drawing and
