The Yukon XL 2WD has the same EPA numbers as the smaller Yukon. EPA figures for the 4WD GMC for both the Yukon and Yukon XL are 20/26 mpg city/highway and 22 mpg combined.
Looking at the closest competitor to GM SUVs, the Ford Expedition (with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6) gets 17/23 mpg (RWD) and 17/22 mpg (4WD). The larger Expedition Max is 17/22 mpg (RWD) and 16/21 mpg (4WD).

GM’s Duramax diesel engine produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 8,000 pounds with the Suburban and 8,200 pounds with the Tahoe (RWD). Changes in performance without tuning tend not to lead to significant performance gains.

Banks Turnkey Engine Program
The Duramax LZ0 is still very new and aftermarket support is very limited, so we will write a separate guide for the LZ0 models as options become available.
Energy constraints on LM2 are still largely unexplored. Currently, the tuning options are said to only add around 50whp, suggesting that the turbocharger will be the initial limitation and an early upgrade will be needed for more power. The LM2 factory turbo is quite small, and early R&D found that to be the first hurdle.
Furthermore, these engines suffer from several common problems with injectors and injection pumps. We don’t know of anyone who has tested the power limits of these, but the issue on their stock truck leads us to assume that a fuel upgrade will be necessary after the turbo upgrade.
For reference, the stock LM2 dyno is approx. 250 m.h and 400 w. With the models we’ll cover below, you’ll add 50-60whp depending on tuning. We’re sure the engine is strong enough internally to handle all these upgrades.
Common Duramax Diesel Problems, Troubleshooting, And Solutions
At the moment there are only 3 worthwhile changes. We’ll be looking at a few additional modifications, such as coolers, pipe kits, and resonator removal, but these haven’t yielded any worthwhile performance gains yet. This may change as turbo upgrades and more advanced models become available, but for now we recommend tuning, intake and exhaust.
HP Tuners is currently the only software that can tune the 3.0 Duramax. Throttle sensor products such as Edge’s Pulsar LT and Banks PedalMonster are available, but don’t confuse them with tuning.
Engine tuning and transmission tuning can be done through HP Tuners, and several companies such as PPEI and RunVSE are starting to offer tuning services for them. The downside is that the ECM and TCM must be unlocked to match these components. Unless you belong to a shop that does 3.0 Duramax tuning, you will need to remove the ECM and/or TCM and send it in for unlocking.
Depending on whether you want the transmission tuned or not, the price for a tune-up will be between $1,500 and $2,000. In addition to Aya, EMC and TCM unlocks, you’ll also need HP Tuners MPVI3 and 6-10 flashing credits. If you have the equipment and a loan, you can reduce the cost by up to $1,000.

“Cool air” might not be the right term, but the second best upgrade is the intake system. Engines require more air to produce more power. A turbocharger will need more air to improve its efficiency and reduce the stress caused by high acceleration levels.
Application updates without tuning often provide very limited performance. However, tuning will increase the efficiency gain and provide a solid power boost while taking some stress off the engine and turbo.

No exhaust system is usually the best exhaust system for a turbocharged car. The lower the pressure after the turbo, the more efficient the turbo will be, resulting in more power. We recommend upgrading the downpipes as they usually provide the best performance in turbo engines. For the 3.0 LM2, the only option currently is a cat-back system. Rumor has it that there is a removal kit on the market, but we will refrain from commenting on that.
