Looking across the country, we can see that California has the most drunk driving fatalities with 1,120 incidents in 2017 alone. Florida and North Carolina follow closely behind with 839 and 413 drunk driving deaths, respectively.
Interestingly, when looking at driving fatalities as a whole, the state with the highest percentage of drunk driving deaths is Connecticut with 84% of all driving deaths related to drunk driving.
Vermont, on the other hand, appears to be the safest state with only 18 drunk driving deaths in 2017.
Drunk Driving Deaths Are Down In Florida
When we look at drunk driving deaths by age group, we can see that 25 to 34 year olds make up 28% of all drunk driving deaths, the most of any age group.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, people aged 75+ have the fewest drunk driving deaths with only 1.9% of all drunk driving deaths.
Looking at drunk driving fatalities by gender, women appear to be drinking and driving far less than males – male drunk driving fatalities account for 80.4% of all deaths.
The most common vehicle for drunk driving fatalities? It is the regular passenger car, comprising 43% of all drunk driving crashes.
