MADRID (AP) – A new animal welfare law that took effect Friday in Spain bans the use of animals in recreational activities that cause them pain or suffering, but allows bullfighting and hunting with dogs.
Spain’s first Specified Animal Welfare Act aims to crack down on abuse. The law specifically targets livestock abuse and carries fines of up to 200,000 euros ($212,000).
Purchasing pets in stores or online is prohibited, but stores are given a grace period to find homes for the animals. In the future, it will be legal to purchase pets only from registered breeders. The new rules allow pets into most establishments, including restaurants and bars.

The law bans the use of wild animals in circuses and gives owners six months to comply. This will allow zoos to continue using marine mammals in dolphin shows until the animals die.
Bullfighting is considered part of Spain’s cultural heritage. A proposal to include hunting dogs in the law sparked protests in some rural areas and was withdrawn by the government.
According to government statistics, around 29 million animals are kept as pets in Spain, most of them dogs. However, approximately 300,000 animals are abandoned each year, and approximately one-third of these animals are culled.
The law also aims to introduce mandatory pet insurance, registration and training for pet owners. However, the submission of these requirements and other legal aspects was delayed in the absence of a sitting government and the lack of detailed administrative procedures. Visualizing Sensuous Suffering and Affective Pain in Early Modern Europe and the Spanish Americas is a collection of cross-cultural studies on the visual treatment of the phenomena of suffering and pain in early modern cultures. These studies, which range geographically from Italy, Spain, and the Low Countries to Chile, Mexico, and the Philippines, and chronologically from his 14th century to his 18th century, explore pain and suffering as physical, emotional, I am considering various aspects of this as a psychological experience.
