The Platinum Card® from American Express has one of the highest annual fees of any mainstream consumer credit card — $695 — but the benefits of the card can more than outweigh the annual cost. For many frequent travelers, the Amex Platinum Card is a must-have, but even if you live closer to home, you can still get hundreds of dollars in benefits.
Is The American Express Platinum Card Worth It?
What’s more, the card now has a great welcome offer that’s incredibly useful even if you’re not currently traveling. You’ll earn 80,000 Membership Rewards® points when you spend $8,000 on new card purchases in your first six months of membership. Based on Insider’s points and miles valuation, that’s roughly $1,440 in travel costs.
With a full six months to meet the minimum spending requirements, it should be easy for most people to unlock the welcome bonus.
Here we focus on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. These cards won’t be worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay off the balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford.
Insider ratings are determined by our editorial team. The rating system takes various factors into account and compares cards to other cards of the same type so that you can choose the card that best suits your goals.

Some of the best Amex Platinum benefits need to be activated before you can use them. To make sure you don’t miss out, here’s what you should do once you get your card to get the most out of it.
One of the biggest perks of the Amex Platinum Card is the annual airline contingency credit. Each calendar year, you can choose one airline on which you can earn up to $200 in cash back credit when you use the card to make a purchase**.

The best part about the airline credit is that since you get it every calendar year (instead of the year you use the card), you can get it twice before paying the second annual fee. Example:
