Single, 32, with no kids, I put everything in storage, sold my car and moved to San Pedro, Belize in early 2007. I was ready to take a year off and enjoy my new country I met many Brits, Canadians and Americans who moved here So what if I was one of the youngest or one of the only singles? So if a lot of them seem a bit awkward, often a bit drunk, and a bit full of stuff.

In the summer of 2006, the former American owners (who had done some major renovations) closed their doors and put the place up for sale. It was purchased at the end of December, and someone I’ve met a few times referred me to the new owner I met with the owner (an American who wasn’t planning on moving to Belize for a few years), had a 4 minute “interview” and we hired a bartender and opened the bar two days later.
Luck? Yes…definitely that I had never managed a bar before but from this… and observations over the last 15 years, I compiled these tips that I would give to anyone looking to visit Belize. And to work and be paid in Belize, in any capacity, you must have a work permit as an immigrant.
