If so, congratulations! What is needed in it. If not, don’t worry—you’ll get all of that in the process.

If you are a non-EU citizen who wants to spend more than 90 days in Italy, you must obtain a visa, which is required by your home country. I’m enrolled in a 2-year master’s degree at Politecnico di Milano, which is a separate process (all online) that happens alongside the visa application. It all depends on which Italian university/course/which Italian consulate you are going through. All consulates have slightly different requirements and these are not always clearly stated – so be persistent and patient! The general steps should be the same.

As I said above, my school application was completed through the university’s online system (convenient!), but it depends on the university. I just sent them something to apply for – my sealed US university transcript, proof that I have completed at least an undergraduate degree. I also had to provide a note from my university that the degree was completed in English (since the course I applied for was in English). The rest of the online application asked me to submit the following information: in addition to filling out a form with my information and work/educational experience, a letter of recommendation from a previous professor, my resume/CV, my architectural team, and a motivation letter. After I found out I was accepted (a green dot appeared next to my name in their system), I started collecting all the documents for the visa.

Meaning Declaration – This is an official document stating that your foreign degree is valid for further studies in Italy. This is where things get super complicated. You will need:

3. Final Notarized High School Transcript, Apostille and Translation: Yes, you read that right. College transfer. Imagine my confused look when I walked into the high school during my lunch break (asking for old government records). I also had to go back a few times because there were no notaries around (maybe call this one ahead of time). Once you get the notarized certificate, you’ll need to send it to the county clerk’s office to have the notary’s signatures verified, then send it to the secretary of state’s office to get an apostille (a shiny gold seal that certifies the document’s authenticity). This may take several weeks. You must include a translation of the original document into Italian (Chicago does not require certification of the translation, as they certify it themselves). I have worked well with online translation services.

* Important! I have mentioned the “Consulate” several times. To clarify, there are several Italian consulates in the United States. They serve different geographical areas. Since I live in the Midwest, the consulate I dealt with was in Chicago. You can just google the consulate you need. Just be warned, you can’t call most of them – it’s all via email (if they even respond). Their websites can be confusing, so read all their information carefully. Their limits are the law, not their requirements, accept that from the start.

4. High School Diploma Certificate, Apostille and Translation: Same story, but with a diploma. My high school doesn’t notarize copies of actual diplomas, so I think they attached an official notarized cover letter to the diploma. Again, Apostille stamp and translation.

5. Notarization, Apostille and Translation: Same story
