Is Tiffany Diamond Worth It – The Tiffany Yellow Diamond is one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry in fashion history. The South African diamond was first discovered in Kimberley Mines in 1877 as a rough stone of 287.42 carats, and then bought by the founder of Tiffany & Co, Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1878 for $18,000 (with an estimated value of $30 million today). Being one of the greatest gemstone discoveries of the 19th century, the Tiffany diamond has helped define the brand as a diamond authority for at least the last 100 years. In such an expansive history in the public eye, the diamond has only been worn by four famous women – Audrey Hepburn, American socialite Mrs. E. Sheldon Whitehouse, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé Knowles.

After being purchased by Tiffany, the 287.42-carat rough stone was sent to Paris to be cut into a 128.54-carat bearing shape under the supervision of the jewelry company’s chief gemologist Dr. George Frederick Kunz. The resulting brilliant diamond boasted 82 facets, and measured 1 inch wide and seven-eighths of an inch high, according to Tiffany & Co.

The first person to wear the Tiffany diamond in public was American socialite Mrs. Mary Whitehouse at the Tiffany Ball on July 13, 1957. Hosted at the Marble House mansion in Rhode Island, USA, the Tiffany Benefit Ball was held by the Newport Preservation Society to raise funds for the restoration of 17th and 18th century buildings in the county. Tiffany & Co. sponsored the ball and loaned the Tiffany diamond for the occasion to be worn by Mrs. Mary Whitehouse who was the wife of the American diplomat Edwin Sheldon Whitehouse.

While Whitehouse was the first person to wear the Tiffany diamond in public, it was Audrey Hepburn’s character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) that solidified the yellow diamond’s place in fashion history. For the film’s quintessential fashion promotion, the diamond was set in a ribbon rosette necklace by French jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger to be worn by Hepburn in promotional photos. After Schlumberger’s death in 1987, the diamond was placed in one of the designer’s “A Bird on a Rock” brooches until it was worn by Lady Gaga to accept the award for Best Original Song at the Oscars 2019.

After Lady Gaga’s turn to the diamond at the Oscars, the entertainer shared the story of that evening on the Graham Norton Show. “I left with the diamond, and I didn’t tell anyone, and Tiffany started to shake,” recalled Gaga, sharing that she went to spend with Madonna. “And then I left, and I really wanted to go to Taco Bell, and then all of a sudden, the car was pulled over by Tiffany’s security, and it was very politely removed from my neck.”

A replica of the diamond was worn the following year by Gal Gadot’s character Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle in a 2020 promotional image for Death on the Nile, which was pushed to a 2022 release date due to of the pandemic. A less impressive imitation necklace was also worn by Kate Hudson’s character Andie Anderson in the 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. As of 2021, Beyoncé Knowles is the fourth person to wear the Tiffany diamond for the brand’s “About Love” campaign with husband Jay-Z and a rare Basquiat painting. In the campaign, Beyoncé pays homage to Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s in a similar black Givenchy dress, with black opera gloves, and a tousled hairdo – a look that Lady Gaga also replicated at the 2019 Oscars .

When it was finished, the founder of Tiffany, Charles Lewis Tiffany, decided not to sell it, but to keep it on display for the public, and the Tiffany Diamond, as it was called, became the star attraction at exhibitions and events in throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries. ; a symbol of Tiffany & Co.’s diamond expertise.

The stone had a starring turn in the film when Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly, declared that she “doesn’t look at jewels except diamonds – like this” – pointing to the gigantic gem.
