Whether your goal with pet insurance is to plan for the expected, the unexpected, or both, there’s likely a plan to fit your needs.
How does it work? Most pet insurance plans work on a reimbursement basis, meaning the customer pays a monthly premium, has the forms filled out by the vet, and then they send you a check for the agreed amount. Which pet insurance company should I choose? Pet insurance companies differ in the types and levels of coverage they offer. For example, some may only offer coverage for unexpected events, while others may have a wellness plan built into the options. When researching pet insurance options, consider: cost, value, coverage (eg, is there a pre-existing condition clause?), reimbursement and company reputation. What doesn’t it cover? Let’s start with the big one. No pet insurance company covers “pre-existing conditions”.
Here are some dog and cat insurance companies (in no particular order of preference). We encourage you to explore the plans to find one that best suits your needs.

Until he suddenly fell ill with a life-threatening bacterial infection, Sam, our beloved chihuahua-terrier mix, was as healthy as a horse (excuse the expression). Fortunately, the vets at the local animal hospital knew what to do and saved Sam’s life.
My wife and I knew the bill for five days of around-the-clock care would be expensive, but we didn’t have to worry because Sam had health insurance. The total bill came to $10,000, which we had to pay before we could take Sam home. Within a week, I received a $9,000 check from the insurance company.

Just like our human family members, our pets can get sick or injured. And when they do, the vet bills can be staggering, even prohibitive. And yet, most pet parents in the US don’t have coverage.
Dr. Jason Nicholas, a practicing veterinarian in Portland, Ore., who runs the website PreventiveVet.com, says it’s not uncommon for people to skip treatment or, in the worst cases, euthanize their pet due to financial constraints.
“And it breaks your heart, especially when it’s a treatable condition, and because of the money I can’t do it,” Nicholas told NBC News BETTER. “There are definitely cases where people who can afford $50 a month for insurance. , they can’t afford $8,000 right now.”
Checkbook.org, an independent, non-profit consumer organization that rates products and services, took a deep dive into pet insurance and found that it has “improved over the past 15 years.” Most policies now cover hereditary and congenital problems, chronic problems and even alternative medicine.

But from a purely financial point of view, Checkbook concluded that “pet insurance is not worth it for many people, especially those who are unwilling to incur large vet bills if their pets suffer serious injuries or major diseases”.
Checkbook collected premium quotes from nine pet insurance plans for “Woof,” a medium-sized male mixed breed dog, and found that even the best insurance plans cost more in premiums than have paid off over the course of Woof’s 13-year life. If Woof suffered costly health problems, his owners usually came out ahead financially.
“Pet insurers often market their policies as affordable, and many do so when the animals are young,” said Kevin Brasler, executive editor of Checkbook. “What most companies don’t disclose is that their premiums increase dramatically as pets age, eventually making them unaffordable.”
For example, coverage for a mixed breed dog living in the San Francisco area from a well-known insurance company would be as little as $44 per month for a puppy. But up to 8 years it’s $106 and up to 12 years it’s $191 per month. Premiums for purebreds often cost much more, sometimes twice as much, than for a mixed breed animal.

What most companies don’t disclose is that their premiums increase drastically as pets age, eventually making them unaffordable.
“Premiums for most policies skyrocket as pets age. Rates double by the time a puppy or kitten reaches 4 or 5 years old and may need expensive veterinary care,” Brasler told NBC News BETTER. “Most pet owners will drop coverage once they have to pay more than $200 a month for it.”
A record number of North American pets, more than 2 million, were covered by insurance last year, up nearly 17 percent, according to the Pet Health Insurance Association of North America.
The checkbook found that two companies stood out from the pack. Healthy Paws and Trupanion offered the lowest lifetime premium costs. This is largely because premiums do not increase as pets age.
Pre Existing Conditions Pet Insurance
Based on its extensive research, Checkbook concludes, “If you’re going to buy pet insurance, Healthy Paws and Trupanion are two good places to start looking.”
“When we added welfare coverage to our hypothetical animals, we found that for most policies, the increased premiums were greater than the benefits we would receive; in other words, a waste of money,” Brasler said.
I buy insurance to make sure my pets get the best possible medical coverage if they get sick or injured. And as any vet will tell you, there’s no way to know if your pet will have moderate or serious and expensive medical problems.
