The first step in repairing any scratch on a plexiglass barrier is to determine the depth of the scratch. According to Acmeplastics.com, “Any scratches deeper than 5mm are very serious scratches – they are generally considered irreparable and can only be repaired occasionally with special polishing agents.”

How To Clean Plexiglass

Basically, if you press your fingernail into the scratch and it gets stuck, the scratch is beyond repair. If the scratch depth is less than 5 mm, then try this process step by step.

1. Using a clean, soft cloth, clean the plexiglass surface with water or a special acrylic cleaner. Even dish soap can be used to clean any dirt. After that, wash and dry the plexiglass.

2. For mild scratches, try using an abrasive acrylic polish (such as Novus Polish Products). Using a cloth, smooth the scratched area in circular motions, then wipe off the polish with a clean cloth.

3. If the scratch cannot be removed with acrylic polish, or if the scratch is more moderate, use a fine sandpaper (starting with 600 or 800 grit). Wet the sandpaper and gently sand the scratch in circular motions. After that, rinse the surface with water, then take a finer sandpaper (1000 grit or 1200 grit) and repeat the same process, sanding the scratch in a circular motion until the surface is flat. Finally, rinse with water and wipe with a clean cloth.

4. Lightly coat the repaired surface with sanding compound and, if you have access to a low-speed sanding wheel, buff the surface to finish. Again, after finishing, wipe the surface with a clean cloth.

5. If the scratch still appears, then the scratch is too deep to repair. Also remember that abrasion weakens plexiglass, so try to use the finest sandpaper.

To prevent the crack from propagating, you need to locate the ends of the crack and drill small holes using a 1/16″ or 1/8″ drill if necessary. According to Joshua Bailey’s instructions in the above article on itsstillruns.com, “the hole should be small enough to round the end of the crack arm, but not big enough to break the windshield.”

Take the plexiglass glue and carefully fill the crack with the needle of the glue syringe. Use more adhesive as needed to fill the crack and wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. Allow the adhesive to set according to the instructions for your chosen adhesive.

If you have a rotary sander, you’ll want to sand the crack to smooth the surface. After polishing it, you can use some cleaner (or even clean water) and a rag to clean the surface.
