Granite is a porous material, which means it can absorb water and other liquids and make it susceptible to stains. That being said, it is important to remember that granite is one of the less porous natural stones and, provided it is properly sealed, will not stain at all.

Water stains occur when an unsealed granite surface absorbs water that has been sitting on it for too long. Now, simple water stains shouldn’t be much of a problem as they will evaporate quickly, leaving the stone without causing visual damage. The real bad guys here are hard water stains.

Hard water is simply water with a high mineral content. When they sink into a granite countertop, those minerals will remain there even after the natural evaporation of the water that brought them there. That’s why hard water stains can be difficult to remove and even uncomfortable.

Since there’s no way to know for sure how stubborn your stain really is, we’ll start with simple tips and techniques and move on to more complex solutions.

This simple solution is the first one you should try. Use a bristle brush to scrub the stain with mild detergent (eg, dishwashing type) and water.

Make a paste of baking soda and water or talcum powder with a dilute solution of ammonia, bleach, or hydrogen peroxide. Use a soft brush to scrub the stain with the paste and then rinse thoroughly.

If you notice water rings sitting on the surface, you can resort to more abrasive techniques to try to remove them. For example, you can lightly clean with a Brillo pad and scrape with a razor blade.

Apply the poultice to the stained area in a ¼ to ½ inch thick layer. Extend this coverage beyond the stained area by at least 1 inch. Cover it with plastic and tape it to seal.

After 24 hours, remove the plastic and let the poultice dry for another 24 hours. It is the drying process that pulls the stain out of the stone and into the fabric.

Then, remove the poultice, rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth. Check how it affected the stain, it could take up to 5 applications to completely remove it.

I recommend testing in a small area that you don’t see all the time. Around a faucet is a great place to try.

You can see my hard water stains below. The granite wasn’t even shiny because of the stains that covered it. I always seem to have water stains on the granite around my faucet.

After testing the granite to make sure it won’t damage it, then apply a small amount of bar keepers friend to a microfiber cloth. Start scrubbing the water stain off the granite.

You shouldn’t rub hard. Just about 20 seconds of light rubbing, then wash and wipe off the bar keeping dust. If you’re scrubbing around a faucet, a small q-tip can help clean the area.

Be sure to remove all powder residue from the granite. Sometimes I like to use a little dish soap to get all the bar keepers friend out of the granite.

Once you have removed all the powder from the granite, use a dry microfiber cloth to dry the water.

If the water stain on the granite is particularly bad, you may need to clean it again. Just add a little more bar keeper friend and rub gently for another 20 seconds or so.

Next, clean the microfiber cloth and wash the counter. When you clean it, it should be bright and shiny again! Be sure to rinse off all the cleaner thoroughly and then dry the granite with a dry microfiber cloth.

Those dark water stains will be easily removed with the tip above. Now you can make your countertops shine!

Once you have removed the water stain from the granite, you can spray the countertops with granite spray.
