When I turned my TARDIS model into an infinity box, I used some of my polished aluminum pieces. Mirror I polished that aluminum myself, but I didn’t polish the entire sheet to a mirror finish. In the picture you can see the other side of the sheet, which was scraped off when I polished the first side. Back to the first page, I show how the original finish of the sheet was, and then how much I polished it. Let’s start polishing the scraped side to show the process I followed
I first tried using a metal polishing product, they worked but had a very strong smell After some research I decided to try using WD40 I would start by sanding it with some fine grit of sandpaper, 1000 grit at first, to get rid of the scratches. I didn’t do this part for the first side, and it’s usually not necessary But it helps to get rid of the scratches on the metal before the polishing starts Don’t forget to spray a coat of WD40 before each sanding and polishing step. You could probably do it by hand, but it would be a lot more work
For this demonstration I will not polish the entire side, just the center part If you want to polish all the edges, remember that you’ll likely sand whatever you’re using. And again, if the sheet metal you’re polishing is in relatively good condition, you’ll be fine skipping the sanding step.
After each sanding, wipe off the residue with a microfiber cloth The polish I use is designed for use on metal After sanding, the surface is gray and not as shiny as before It will be like this after each of these walks Just add more WD40 and move on to the next grit I will repeat these steps up to 3000 grit

Next I’ll move on to the buffing pad This is actually where I started on the first side, and got great results Again, only use sandpaper first if the surface is in rough shape
For the buffing pad, just follow the same steps Apply WD40, then use the buffing pad as you would sandpaper, wiping with the microfiber cloth between each buffing pad. The buffing pads I use are color coded for how coarse or fine I can’t tell what grit is for everyone just by feeling or seeing them The package they came in listed them in order
It’s hard to tell, but after finishing with the first buffing pad, there is still a slight reflection With each buffing pad, more and more reflections appear I have pictures showing the progress from each buffing pad
After each pass through the buffing pad, there is definitely some reflection, even if it looks ugly This is the sandblasting step I did first But more buffing will help clear it up I start with the first buffing pad and go through each step again

After the second pass through the buffing pad, my batteries are ready to recharge, so I stop for the day, clean the buffing pad, charge my batteries. Comparing this side to the first side shows that I have a little more polishing to go before I have a nice mirror finish. You can also see that the first side is getting scraped with the whole process This is important to remember and keep in mind for your project
When I returned to polishing, I started with the first buffing pad and went through the same steps But this time I added an extra step After wiping away the residue, I buffed the surface using my microfiber cloth I did this after every use of the buffing pad This is a step that I forgot to do before, and it seems to help with the polishing process
Once I finish going through each buffing pad, I compare it to the first side You can repeat the process as many times as you like to get the level of finish you want
