How To Get Scratches Off Of Plexiglass
Plexiglas, or acrylic plastic, is a common material used in headlights and vehicles because it is shatter-resistant. However, it can easily be scratched and damaged. If you have deep scratches on your plexiglass, you may need to use sandpaper to remove them. Otherwise, you can easily get rid of surface level scratches with a commercial remover or a heat gun. No matter how you get rid of them, your plexiglass will look like new when you’re done!

As more people add plexiglass barriers to their work environment for an extra layer of protection during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is also a need to learn how to care for plexiglass barriers. While plexiglass is a popular choice due to its durability and clarity, plexiglass is susceptible to scratches and damage.
In this blog, AGC Signs will look at plexiglass repair, specifically repairing scratches and other minor damage.

The first step in repairing any scratch on the Plexiglas barrier is to determine the depth of the scratch. According to Acmeplastics.com, “any scratches deeper than 5mm are extremely heavy scratches – these are generally considered irreparable and can only be repaired occasionally with special polishing tools.”
Acrylic (plexiglass) Vs. Polycarbonate (lexan)
Basically, if you run your fingernail over a scratch and it breaks, the scratch is probably beyond repair. However, if the scratch is less than 5 mm in depth, try this step-by-step process.
1. Using a clean, soft cloth, wipe the plexiglass surface with water or special acrylic cleaner. Even dish soap can be used to remove any dirt. Then rinse and dry the plexiglass.
2. For mild scratches, try using an abrasive acrylic polish (such as Novus Polish Products). Using a cloth, buff the scratch in a circular motion until the area is smooth, then wipe off the polish with a clean cloth.
3. If the scratch cannot be removed with acrylic polish, or for more moderate scratches, use fine sandpaper (starting with 600 or 800 grit sandpaper). Wet the sandpaper and gently rub in a circular motion over the scratch. Next, rinse the surface with water, then take finer sandpaper (1000 grit or 1200 grit) and repeat the same process by rubbing the scratch in a circular motion until the surface is smooth. Finally, rinse with water and wipe with a clean cloth.

4. Lightly coat the repaired surface with polish and, if you have access to a low-speed buffing wheel, buff the surface to finish. Again, wipe the surface with a clean cloth when you’re done.
5. If the scratch still appears, then the scratch is probably too deep to repair. Also, keep in mind that friction weakens the Plexiglas, so try to use the finest sandpaper possible.
If a piece of your plexiglass breaks and you think it can be glued back together, you can actually find plexiglass glues at the hardware store. If you look at different DIY videos, you will see that there are several different ways to glue the plexiglass. Check out the video below from ePlastics.com to see how to glue plexiglass.
Now, if you have plexiglass that is cracked, you can also use plexiglass glues. In “How to Repair a Cracked Plexiglas Windshield” by Joshua Bailey, you can read step-by-step instructions for fixing a crack. Basically, you need to do the following:
Easy Ways To Remove Plexiglass Scratches
To prevent a crack from spreading, you’ll want to find the edges of the crack and drill tiny holes where needed with a 1/16″ or 1/8″ drill bit. According to Joshua Bailey’s instructions from the itstillruns.com article above, “the hole should be small enough to round the end of the crack arm, but not big enough to break the windshield.”
Take the plexiglass glue and carefully fill the crack with the needle of a glue syringe. Use as much glue as needed to fill the crack and wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Allow the glue to set according to the instructions of your chosen glue.
If you have access to a rotary polisher, you want to polish over the crack to smooth the surface. After scrubbing it, you can use some cleaner (or even fresh water) and a cloth to wipe the surface.
Keep in mind that repairing a crack in Plexiglas is a temporary solution. This can keep your Plexiglas in use, saving you money.

Plexiglas (commonly known as acrylic) is a good alternative to standard glass. It is quite cheap and can last for a long time. However, maintaining a plexiglass can be difficult for some people. Even a tiny scratch (if overlooked) could lead to some serious damage. Therefore, removing scratches from acrylic becomes essential to prevent further damage. There are many ways to remove scratches from plexiglass. This article shares some practical ways to get rid of scratches from plexiglass. Let’s dive in.
Ways To Remove Scratches From Plastic
Plexiglas can get scratched from a number of sources. But, the good thing is that you can remove almost all types of scratches from its surface. Now, not all scratches require a similar removal process. This is because the depth and type of scratches will determine how they can be removed. So here’s how to remove all types of scratches from acrylic.
Light scratches are quite common in acrylic. You can get rid of them without too much effort. Here is the list of items you will need to remove light scratches.
Before starting, make sure the acrylic surface is free of dust particles. Then use a clean cloth (preferably a microfiber cloth) to remove all dust particles. Now, you need to use the 800 grit sandpaper. Soak it in water and start rubbing it on the plexiglass surface.
Rub the sandpaper with even force and in a specific direction. During the rubbing process, the acrylic surface will appear frosted. This is natural, as sanding creates this frosted effect. It will disappear once the process is complete.

Then take a 1200 grit sandpaper and sand it the same way. Apply equal pressure and rub it for 3-4 minutes. Small scratches will disappear. Then take a soft cloth and clean the residue left behind. The glass will not have any more scratches.
Apply some acrylic/plastic polish using a microfiber cloth. You may need to apply plastic polish a few times to get the desired shine.
Homeowners can also remove moderate scratches from plexiglass. The process remains almost the same. Instead of using 800 grit sandpaper, you should start sanding the plexiglass surface with 600 grit sandpaper. Repeat this process for 2-3 times. Then just follow the same process (as for light scratches).
Deep scratches can be somewhat difficult to get rid of. But don’t worry, they can be removed with a little effort. Here’s what you’ll need for the rest of the deep acrylic scratches.

First, you need to blend the surface of the acrylic. For this, use the rotary polisher. Apply some compound to the wool. Now, gently start rolling the pad over the plexiglass surface.
Be very polite at first. Keep it
