Simply dip a cloth or rag in olive oil and rub your scratched wooden surface thoroughly, paying special attention to the scratched areas. Note that this only works on real wood, not the kind made with a thin layer of veneer.
Do other types of oils work? Yes! I have found that canola or vegetable oil also works.
What about vinegar? I’ve heard that a little vinegar with the oil helps cut through the dirt, but in my experience it doesn’t make much of a difference. If you want to try it, mix white vinegar with oil in a ratio of 1:4 (more oil than vinegar).
Does this work on all wood surfaces? For some reason it doesn’t work on my dark stained dining room table. I think it has to do with the type of wood and the color of the stain (I used these furniture markers instead). However, it works really well on my interior cabinetry and doors.

Ok, not 100%, but it sure makes a difference! You can use the same oil method on leather furniture, but since there are so many different types of leather, you may want to do a spot test first to make sure it won’t stain. Fair skin can actually absorb it and cause it to darken.
After you’ve done your spot test, apply a very small and even amount of olive oil to a cloth or rag. Do not allow large amounts of oil to remain in any one place for too long. You want to work quickly and spread the small amount of oil as evenly as possible so it doesn’t have a chance to absorb too deeply. The key is to use elbow grease rather than oil on the skin. A little goes a long way!
As you can see, it made a world of difference to my couch. However, if you have a large area to cover or are concerned about the type of leather you will be treating, be sure to test it on an inconspicuous area of the couch first.
