Simply dampen a cloth or rag with olive oil and carefully rub the scratched wood surface, paying special attention to the scratched area. Remember, this only applies to solid wood, not manufactured wood with thin layers of veneer.
Do other types of oils work? Yes! I find canola or vegetable oil also works.
Where’s the vinegar? I’ve heard that adding a little vinegar to the oil can help remove grime, but in my experience it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. If you want to try it, mix white vinegar with oil in a 1:4 ratio (more oil than vinegar).
Does this apply to all wooden surfaces? For some reason it doesn’t work on my dark stained dining table. I believe it has something to do with the type of wood and the color of the stain (I used these furniture markers instead). However, it works great for all my built-in cabinets and doors.
