Scratches in car paint can have various causes. Car accidents, vandalism, bad parking, and other parking lot mishaps are common causes of the odd scratch or two on your perfect paint. Although scratches affect the appearance of your car, paying an auto body shop for a new coat of paint or even a small touch-up can be costly. You can try buffing out superficial scratches with toothpaste, using a scratch removal product for small scratches, or sanding and repainting the area if the scratch is deep.

To remove a superficial scratch from your car, try using non-gel toothpaste. First, use a cloth to apply a thick layer of toothpaste to the scratch. Then apply the toothpaste into the scratch with a clean toothbrush. Once you’ve brushed the area thoroughly, rinse off the toothpaste and the scratch should be gone. For deeper scratches, try sandpaper. First, sand the scratched area with 2000-grit sandpaper until the surface of your car feels rough. Then rinse the area and wipe it dry with a cloth. Next, spray the sanded area with body primer and allow it to dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Once dry, spray the area with body paint that matches the color of your car. Finally, seal the paint with wax or polish. If nothing else works, try a car scratch removal kit. Read on for more information on how to use these methods! There’s nothing worse than discovering a new scratch on your car’s surface… Whether it’s a light scratch or a swirl, it can be fixed easily and without expensive repairs at a body shop. Check out our article below for a simple guide on how to remove scratches from car surfaces using some scratch remover products from Turtle Wax.
Differences in formulation. Scratch and swirl removal products generally have similar performance characteristics to abrasives and polishing products. However, scratch and swirl removers are formulated and product instructions are tailored to make them suitable for repairing minor imperfections in the overall finish or for local repairs.
Types Of Car Scratches And Repairs Explained
Decide which scratch repair product is best for your car. When oxidation and matte finish are a priority; Then rubbing and polishing pastes are best suited. If the focus is on repairing scratches or removing paint imperfections, the focus should be on scratch repair or scratch and swirl removal products.
Scratch and swirl removers should be used to remove light scratches or surface imperfections that are usually noticeable on the surface paint. Examples of this include light traces of fingernails around door handles, slight signs of wear or when a surface loses its shine. These products are safe cleaners for removing general road buildup or swirl marks from automatic car washes.
TIP: Try not to polish hot surfaces and avoid polishing paint in direct sunlight. The finish should be cool to the touch.
If the scratch is slightly deeper or you have a large car surface affected by the imperfections, we recommend using an orbital DA instead of hand application as it applies higher pressure and ensures more professional results.

Note: Pasty compounds are more aggressive than liquid compounds. For new, darker finishes we recommend Turtle Wax Clean Finish Polishing Compound. For older, oxidized paintwork, we recommend cleaning with paste agents.
Since imperfections tend to be more noticeable on black vehicles, we recommend a special solution. Our Jet Black range uses pigments to cover light surface scratches, swirls and imperfections to create a jet black appearance. Paint repair options range from simple tinted waxes and miracle sticks like those seen on TV to customized multi-step treatments to match your car’s exact color. Since I’m someone who’s good with a wrench, I chose the latter and tested Automotive Touchup’s kit on my pockmarked 1993 Ford Bronco. Depending on what materials you need, it will cost about $50, compared to $5,000 for a professional repaint. This collection of aerosol cans and sandpaper is as close to a paint booth appointment as you can get. Here’s how it works and whether it’s worth it.
Unless the car you are repairing is more than 20 years old or has been specially painted, the paint is almost certainly a catalyzed clear coat. Artificially hardened by toxic chemicals, it is stable within hours of factory application.

On the other hand, the paint you are applying, whether primer, paint or clear coat, is a varnish. Paints dry because the solvent evaporates and the solids remain. Even if they feel hard and can be sanded within a few minutes, they will continue to shrink for a while. Allow the finishes to dry at least overnight to allow them to shrink before applying another coat. If a repair requires multiple coats to build up the paint film to full thickness, one coat per day is best. Of course, be safe. The amounts of solvent used are small but work in a well-ventilated area. Make sure you degrease the area with solvent before starting.
The factory paint code should be located somewhere on your car, probably on a sticker or metal plaque under the hood or in the door sill. This will be very helpful in finding the right touch-up.
If you can’t find the color in the touch-up paint display at the auto parts store, your next, albeit expensive, step is to go to the parts counter at the car dealer, at least if you have a car that’s less than 10 to 15 years old.
If you’re really stumped, an auto paint shop can custom mix you a pint; Take a sample, such as the gas cap or a mirror. I also got great matches from expresspaint.com and their motorcycle counterpart color-rite.com, where you can order touch-up pens and bottles, aerosol cans or quarts or larger cans of matching paint by mail.

Smaller scratches, those that do not penetrate the paint through the clear coat, or areas with low gloss or orange peel texture can often simply be buffed out with polishing compound. Yes, this will remove some of the clear coat. Therefore, only polish the minimum area required, otherwise you will have to re-spray part of the protective top coat. Then clean the plate thoroughly to remove the abrasives.
You need to get a suitable color. The same procedure can be used to repair scratches in primer by first applying a coat of primer and then sanding off the top coat until only the underside of the scratch is covered. Do not skip this step: poor adhesion and/or rust will result.
As with any serious touch-up kit, there are many materials available. The box for my black Bronco (color code M1724A) contains prep solvent, abrasive paste, various grit sandpaper, rubber gloves, a dust rag to pick up dust, pre-taped plastic to block dirty overspray (e.g. blue painter’s tape for your car), and cans with primer, primer and clear coat.
This all suggests a lot of work, which turns out to be true. I watch one of Automotive Touchup’s instructional videos and print out the instructions. I take everything outside and then look for the most unsightly scratches and a rust spot on the hood. I wipe it down with solvent and a rag, then tape off one edge to protect my treasured Eddie Bauer fender emblem.

It feels completely wrong to lean against the fender with a folded piece of 180-grit, but that’s exactly what you need to do. You make the scratch much, much worse before you make it better. I’m getting big, horrible white spots on the Bronco’s fender, door, hood, and rear quarter panel. But in a way, it’s cathartic to strip it down to bare metal in the name of making the car beautiful again.
On to the sprays. First comes the black-tinted, sandable primer. It fills in the sandpaper notches with something similar to the original black, which immediately puts me at ease.
I apply a total of three coats to the metal and wait five to ten minutes for each coat to dry before applying the next. This is an ongoing theme in touch-ups: spend two minutes painting, then wait ten minutes to do another
