No one likes scratches while driving, whether it’s a new car or one that has covered a lot of miles in its lifetime. But what can be done about those little scratches and dings that suddenly appear? And how to remove these car scratches?
How To Buffer Scratches Out Of A Car
Car scratches can occur for a variety of reasons. From poor parking to accidentally scratching items stored on the hood or otherwise – it happens and we just need to know how to fix it.

Pour water over the surface of the scratch and rinse the car thoroughly. If using a hose, make sure the speed is not too high.
To wash the lines, use car wash soap or liquid detergent and scrub with a microfiber cloth or soft sponge. Do not use any kind of powder detergent as it can cause more scratches when you clean with it.
This solution works well for surface scratches that have barely scratched the clear coat of paint. Dirt often collects in these surface-level scratches, making them look worse than they really are. So regular, gentle washing with liquid detergent and a microfiber cloth should do the trick temporarily.
Depending on the size of the scratch, add toothpaste to the microfiber cloth and rub the scratch in a circular motion. Make sure the toothpaste is a smooth paste (without small granules in it) to avoid additional scratches during the cleaning process.

After 5 minutes of doing this, rinse off the excess toothpaste and wipe with a soft microfiber cloth.
This method is quite effective for surface-level scratches that are little more than a minor scratch, but less than a scratch that goes all the way to the car’s actual paint.
Spray a generous amount of WD-40 on the scratches on your car and let it sit for 50-60 seconds.
Take a soft microfiber cloth and gently (but firmly) wipe it all off to really get the product working.

Sometimes milder solutions like regular detergent or toothpaste won’t help with scratches. WD-40 is great for removing scratches that have even cut through the base coat of paint. In addition to being safe for use on automotive surfaces, it also adds a subtle shine and extra layer of protection against dust scratches and also prevents rust.

Take a soft, dry cloth and a drop of toothpaste. Gradually polish it using circular motions over the scratch mark. When you can’t see the scratch anymore, you’re done! Make sure the area around paint scratches is clean so there’s no risk of polishing dirt or grime onto your paint and making it worse.
This method works best on shallow, small scratches that don’t fully penetrate your car’s clear coat. If you can scratch your nail, it’s too deep to fix with toothpaste and you should go to a body shop instead.

Toothpaste acts as a bit of sandpaper for your teeth, but don’t over think it or it will grind you down. It acts as a mild abrasive, polishing and smoothing the surface.
On car paint scratches, toothpaste does the same thing, gently working to smooth the clear coating on your car to remove the appearance of scratches.
If you want to speed up the process, you can even use a polishing attachment on your drill (but we don’t recommend trying this on your teeth!).
Whitening toothpaste is best. Although you may not feel it on our teeth, whitening toothpaste has a gentler texture and contains mild abrasives similar to those found in car polish. As you apply the whitening toothpaste to your car, these abrasives will work to gently smooth the surface and create an even shine.
