How To Apply For Visa To Vietnam

Obtaining a visa can be one of the more time-consuming and complicated aspects of travel. The rules often change depending on where you want to go, how you’re getting there, and where you’re coming from. Turning to the internet for help often turns up outdated, incomplete or – worst of all – wrong information, making the whole process even more frustrating.

How To Apply For Vietnam E Visa 2023: Costs & Processing Time

Figuring out how to apply for a Vietnam visa was no different. Google search results were flooded with dubious websites of agencies offering to take care of the entire visa process for cash. We got lost in the visa jungle and had no idea how to get out.

It was a coincidence that it was at that time that we were approached by, who heard about our plans to visit Vietnam for a few months. They were nice enough to answer all our questions and made our visa experience easy.

Depending on your nationality, you may be eligible for a visa waiver. This means that you do not need any visa before entering Vietnam. If you qualify and only plan to stay for a week or two, this is definitely the best option for you.

The only thing you need to do is book your flights and you’re ready to go, but don’t forget to print the booking confirmation for the return flight (within the visa exemption period) to show at the Immigration Service in Vietnam.

Differences Between Vietnam Tourist And Business Visa

If you do not qualify for a visa exemption or if you wish to stay in Vietnam for a longer period of time, then you must apply for a visa.

Depending on your travel plans, you can choose between a single-entry or multiple-entry tourist visa with a validity period of one or three months.

We chose the three-month single entry visa because we planned to focus primarily on Vietnam and did not want to travel to other countries during that time.

If you are traveling to Vietnam by land, sea or want to get a visa before arriving in the country, you can apply at one of the Vietnamese embassies in your country. The process takes 2-5 business days and you will be asked to mail your passport or apply in person.

If you plan to fly, the easiest and fastest option is to apply for a Visa on arrival.

As of 2017, citizens of 40 countries can apply for a one-month entry to Vietnam online. It costs $25 and takes 3 business days. You can apply for an e-Visa here. At the end of your application, you will receive a code that you will need to use to print your visa. None of us have tried this application method and we don’t know how fast the process is.

Before you can enter Vietnam and apply for a visa on arrival, you will need to purchase an approval letter. This allows you to enter the country without a visa and confirms that you will receive a visa once you are in Vietnam.

This is important because airlines will not allow you to board the plane if you cannot prove that you are allowed to enter the destination country.

Vietnam 3 Month Visa: An Ultimate Guide To Visa Application

There are many agencies that you can use to get your visa approval letter on arrival in Vietnam. In the end we decided to go with and had a great experience.

They usually process your approval letter in 2 business days, but there are options for those who need faster processing. All you have to do is fill out a very simple form and then pay the fee via PayPal or credit card.

Prices vary from $21 to $34 (+ $25 for fishing at the airport), depending on the type of visa, the number of people applying and if you choose additional services. We chose the cheapest option and received our approval letters in 2 business days as promised. There are cheaper options on the market. We shopped around a bit and thought other agencies didn’t seem reliable and safe.

We were a little concerned about our privacy so we messaged our contact at and found out that this is standard procedure at the Vietnam Immigration Department issuing approval letters. However, it is possible to receive a confidential letter containing only your information if you notify after submitting the form online.

Along with your approval letter, sends you the visa stamp application form via email. Fill it out and attach a passport size photo (6x4cm) with a white background.

When you arrive at the airport in Vietnam, look for signs that say “Visa on Arrival” or “Visa on Landing”. The counters are usually located right next to immigration and are hard to miss. When you hear the immigration officer calling you, you go to the window, pay the $25 stamping fee, and get your passport and visa back.

August 2023, New 90 Day E Visa Vietnam

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, which is notorious for its overcrowded airport and long lines at immigration booths. If you don’t want to risk spending a long time at the counter after a few hours of flying, offers a fast track option to get you through immigration faster.

We decided not to use the fast track and were very happy to find only a few people at the Visa on Arrival counter at 9pm. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes in total. My friend Jeff, who arrived just two hours earlier, was not so lucky. He had to wait for almost an hour. So sometimes it might be worth paying a little more to get a fast track.

Overall, the entire process of applying for a visa on arrival in Vietnam was surprisingly quick and easy. Applying online instead of queuing at the embassy was very convenient and the people at were very helpful in providing information about the current regulations and the entire procedure which made sure we were following the correct steps.
