However, depending on what type of program you are interested in (long or short) and what country you are from, you may not even need a visa!
The short version is that if you are from a country that has a visa waiver agreement with Japan and the course you are attending is for 3 months or less, you do not need to apply for a student visa.
Registered schools in Japan can accept students from abroad on student visas. The key term to search for is 学校法法
(university). Basically, only registered educational organizations approved by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) can apply for a student visa.
Everything You Need To Know About Getting A Japan Student Visa
When in doubt, you can contact us and ask, or visit the school’s homepage for more information. Generally, if a school offers courses of 6 months or longer, they can usually sponsor a student visa.
The good news is that the standards for obtaining a student visa are not too demanding. However, they are very strict about it, so before you go too far, make sure you meet the basic eligibility requirements!
If you don’t meet the above education requirements but still want to study in Japan, citizens of many countries can enter Japan without a visa for up to 3 months and take short courses at schools like AkamonkaiorSAMU Language School to study
If you are over 30 years old or have been out of school for 5 years or more, the Japanese government will carefully consider your visa application. They want to ensure that they only issue student visas to people who are serious about being a student in Japan, so you’ll need to add some confirmation to your application.

Real talk though – the Japanese government is silent on processing your documents. If you are new to this process, it can be very frustrating.
The only thing you can do at this stage is to wait and make sure that your application is put together correctly. The Japanese government is aware of its deadlines for obtaining your COE and obtaining your final visa before arriving in Japan. It might feel a bit clunky, but it generally works without a problem.

Most people don’t know this, but your Japanese visa is basically just a permit to enter the country. Once you have passed immigration, they will give you a Residence Card with “Status of Residence” written on it.
This is now your permit to live in Japan. Whatever your visa date is in your passport is no longer relevant – it has become an official residence status.
However, most people just refer to their residency status as a “visa” anyway, and you’ll probably get some weird looks if you tell someone you have a 2-year SoR instead of a 2-year visa.
When you start researching Japanese language schools, it’s important to think one step ahead, as some documents take time.

It can be a little vague… That’s why there’s a lot of “about” and “about” in the recommendations you see online. However, to increase your chances of successfully obtaining a Japanese student visa, consider the perspective of Japanese immigration: “higher savings and more stable salary = less chance of you working illegally.”
There are rules for having a student visa in Japan, and unless you want to have a nice chat with the immigration department, you probably want to know what they are and how you can avoid having your visa (residence status) revoked.
If you decide to withdraw from school, the school is obliged to inform Japanese immigration that you no longer meet the requirements for your student residence. The government has the power to deport you from Japan if you intend to stay on a Japanese student visa without registering, so think carefully about your actions! There may be consequences.
