To get a tourist visa I had to go through the VFS like other Schengen countries. While browsing the official Australian visa website for the required documents, I saw an “Apply Now” button. At first I thought it was only available for some western countries, but India was on the list too!! Upon further investigation, I found that this was a recent policy change from Australia. The rest of the post explains the visa application process.

The first step is to register with the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Their website is https://immi.homeaffair.gov.au/. It asks for basic information such as name, email, and phone number. After creating an account, you can start applying for a visa. The good thing is that you can also refer others from the same account.

The required documents are very detailed. Here is the list of documents that I submitted for the visa.

Copying a passport is a complicated process. First, you need to print the passport pages, get a stamp and signature from a notary, and then scan them to get a digital copy. In my case, it was a huge effort because I had to do it for the four of us. The number of notarized passport pages was huge!!

It takes about 2 hours to complete one application and upload the documents, provided you have all the required documents. It cannot be rushed. I applied for all four of us and ended up applying together. I could pay once for all applications.

After applying, the only option is to wait. The website noted that it takes 18 to 29 days to process the application. If they come back to explain, it may be too late.
