Getting Scratches Out Of Corian – Here is the right way to remove scratches in Corian and other man-made materials used for countertops like Serel, Avonite etc. There are no shortcuts in the process. Taking shortcuts will only make your countertops look spotty and unprofessional. Before we begin I will explain the different finishes in which Corian and most man-made materials are manufactured. The first finish is SATIN. This is the best finish if you want to hide scratches and require less maintenance. The second finish is SEMI GLOSS. This finish requires more maintenance and will show scratches. The third finish is GLOSS. This will show a lot of scratches and will require MUCH more maintenance, such as a good cleaner/wax. The wax acts as a lubricant and keeps the glossy finish looking good even if you have scratches. I wax our counter tops almost every time before I travel with a buffer (Wal-Mart auto department minus $25.00).

Tri-mite paper in grit sizes 320, 600, 800 and 1200. In total you use 7 different grits of paper. You use sandpaper with grit 80 to 1200 grit Tri-mite paper. No short cuts. Start with 80 grit and sand the area with the scratches.

DO NOT tilt the sander while sanding; a valley is then created in that area. KEEP the sander flat.

Concentrate the sander on the scratched area and on about a 12-inch circle. When you are sure that the scratches are almost gone, switch to the next sandpaper.

Sand the area plus a little more of the countertop. Replace the sandpaper or Tri-Mite paper and cover more of the countertop each time you start sanding.

By the time you use the 1200 grit Tri-Mite paper, you should have sanded your entire area. As you can see in the photo, my countertop has been completely sanded.

Use 3M Finesse-It ll Glaze (a mild polish) and a buffer or polisher. Spread the finesse over the countertop with the buffer or polisher before switching on the tool. Polish the countertop until the Finesse disappears. Let the Finesse dry and wipe it off. If your Corian® worktop has a scratch, there is no need to panic. The great thing about a solid surface worktop is that it’s easy enough to repair.

The first thing you need to determine is how deep the scratch is. If it is a minor scratch on the surface, these can be easily repaired at home. While deeper scratches may require a patch replacement.

This method applies to minor scratches and scrapes on the surface, but does not work on cracks and deep cuts. Always be careful when sanding your Corian® surfaces and do not use highly abrasive products.

We recently received an inquiry from the village of Cuddington in Cheshire regarding a Corian worktop that was cracked and scratched in many places. Although we are known for our floor restoration work and equipment, we work just as well on stone worktops, so we are happy to help.

Granite is probably the ultimate surface for a kitchen worktop and although extremely durable it is expensive. Corian is man-made and has a lower cost, but is more easily damaged by heat and scratches than natural stone. However, it is a very sturdy material and we believe it can be maintained in the same way as natural stone.

After discussing the size of the worktop and the cost of re-polishing the surface, a date for a visit was set.

How Much Do Corian Countertops Cost? (2023)

To renovate the Corian worktop, the first step was to rub the surface with a portable polisher equipped with an 800 grit resin disc. Water is used to keep the worktop wet so that the fine dust released is absorbed. The pad should be applied to the point where the scratches have been removed. To prevent shallow spots from forming, it is necessary to run the pad over the entire surface to the same level.

The work surface is rinsed with water to remove the fine slurry that forms and then the process is repeated with a 1200 grit disc, followed by another rinse. At this point any scratches or cracks in the Corian should be gone, but the polished appearance will have been dulled.

To bring back the shine to the countertop it needs to be polished and for this we like to use Tile Doctor Diamond Burnishing pads which come in a 6 inch diameter and a perfect size for use with the portable buffer. It is a similar process using water for lubrication and starts with an 800 grit pad and ends with a 1500 grit pad.

After the countertop dried, two coats of sealer were applied to protect it. On this occasion I used Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal, an undetectable product with a natural appearance recommended for use in food preparation and serving areas.

When To Repair Or Replace Mesa Corian

To finish off I polished the worktop with a 6 inch white pad, the transformation was fantastic and my client was delighted. For aftercare, I recommend using Tile Doctor Stone Patina Spray, a mild cleaner that preserves the patina of the stone. Repair countertops that show a history of spilled wine, dropped pans and unidentified sharp objects, and you’ll maintain the value of your kitchen and home. You can easily hide some counter accidents, while only professional contractors can solve other surface problems.

Even granite countertops suffer from kitchen wear and tear. But with a little time and knowledge you can make them shine. After you repair them, don’t forget to reseal them.

Cracks, Chips, Scratches: Fill nicks in granite by building up layers of epoxy resin colored to match the stone. First clean the area with acetone, which breaks down grease. Be sure to open a window for ventilation.

Stains: The type of stain – wine or ink, oil or bleach – determines the type of compress you need to suck it out. A paste of flour and hydrogen peroxide removes grease, oil, bleach and ink stains; a mixture of flour and bleach cleans wine stains. If you want to go commercial, look at the stone cleaners Alpha, Aqua Mix and StoneTech. Cost: $6 to $20.

Solid surface countertops, such as Corian, are man-made from resin, acrylic and other materials. They are strong, but not insensitive to scratches and stains. To repair minor scratches, rub a white polish over the area with a wool pad, then apply wax to the countertop.

For deeper scratches or cuts, call a professional. Calculate labor costs at approximately $15 to $35 per hour. If you need to replace parts of the countertop, expect to pay at least $35 to $65 per square foot.

Larger problems require replacement of the damaged piece. Laminate is available in a billion colors, but finding an exact match for an old counter can be tricky.
