Save Money On Travel With The American Express Platinum Card
With the disturbing news that Citi has dropped travel protection across all its cards – even on its flagship Citi Prestige, Chase is left as an option for booking flights if you need travel protection. Apparently, as reported by The Points Guy, American Express has decided it really wants to compete for your small business and will be adding travel protection on January 1, 2020.
Of course, this is Amex so there is a catch. We’ll get to that later but let’s take a look at these new trips first.
Similar to the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can get $500 for eligible expenses if your flight is delayed more than 6 hours – think food, lodging, taxis, Lyft, Uber and some private property. If you have 4 personal cards or 2 small business cards, you may be eligible for deferred payment assistance. At this time, it looks like you need to book a travel ticket to be eligible for assistance (more on that later). This is the card that gives this perk:

In addition, you may be eligible for cancellation/disruption assistance if you pay for a ticket to travel with one of these forms and experience one of the following adverse events:
You can get up to $10,000 in non-refundable credit on one trip. You are limited to $20,000 in coverage for 12 months. Hopefully, you won’t need to use these benefits. I hope you never push the 12-month limit. That’s just too much for one person per year.
Alternatively, you can get $300 in payment for expenses if you experience a delay of 12+ hours if you have 3 personal cards and 2 business cards:
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® card offers $500 in coverage for stays longer than 12 hours, so this isn’t too impressive if you ask me. However, if you don’t have Sapphire Preferred or another card with better insurance, at least you can get something!

If you book an award ticket and only pay taxes/fees, you will be charged. If you book through Amex Travel, you also pay whether you book a cash ticket or you Pay with Points. The latter can be especially useful if you have Amex Business Platinum and are looking for the best price class (or economy on your pre-selected airline) as you can get. 35% back when you Pay with Points.
After you spend $15,000 in qualifying purchases with the Platinum Business Card in the first 3 months of Membership
If there’s one thing American Express likes to do with credit cards, it’s make perks annoyingly difficult to use. Consider the airline fees that come with the Amex Platinum card. You get $200 per year, but it is limited to a pre-selected airline and it only covers some of the incidental costs such as checked bags.
Well, Ames is at it again with this one. You will only have to pay if you book a travel ticket. That can be a simple trip from point A to point B and back to point A. You will also be eligible for assistance if you include stopping and/or opening the chin – point A to point B to point C to point A .
Amex Delta Skymiles Gold 2023 Review: Pros, Cons, And More
Let’s say I travel with United miles and use the Excursionist Perk. I can fly from my home airport of Washington Dulles (IAD) to Vienna (VIE) on Austrian Airlines, spending a few days. then fly SWISS to Zurich (ZRH) for a few days. From there, I can take a train to Munich (this is jaw-dropping) and after a few days return to Washington Dulles on Lufthansa.
Unfortunately, one-way award tickets and one-way cash tickets are not covered by Amex’s new travel protection. I think that would be a little easier for people to understand.
If you regularly book one-way flights, not much changes for you. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® will also be the best option to earn 3X Rewards while ensuring you’re covered by extended coverage and interruption/cancellation insurance out. If you book multiple cash travel or award tickets, Amex Platinum’s 5X Membership Rewards are hard to beat when combined with travel protection.
The mid-tier travel deferral coverage on Amex Gold cards (etc.) is pretty blah. It’s better than nothing, but $300 is only 60% of the $500 in coverage the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers.
Delta Reserve Card Review 2023
Personally, I’ll probably move around to my Amex Platinum but I’ve been collecting a lot of one-way tickets – especially award tickets – and that means the Chase Sapphire Reserve® will get a lot of use (RIP Citi Prestige).
It’s good to see Amex at least trying to compete with Chase a bit. When Citi started offering business to Chase when it got travel protection, we at least have an option now. What remains to be seen is how the filing and reimbursement process works with Amex.
I just wish Amex would start to understand that in order to compete with Chase, it needs to make its benefits easier to use. All the problems it throws up along the way just make customers think that Amex is trying to offer benefits in name only and hope that we don’t use them.
Don’t get me wrong, this is an improvement from Amex. They can only do better with it. If Amex decided to pay for one-way tickets, that would be a real game changer. They have plenty of time to change that before the new benefits start on January 1, 2020 but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
If You Have A Delta Amex Card, Today Is A Good Day!
New to the world of points and miles? The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the best card to start with.
With a bonus of 60,000 points after $4,000 spent in the first 3 months, 5x points on travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal and 3x points on restaurants rice, streaming services, and online grocery stores (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesalers), this card can’t be beat to get started!
