Started years ago, and the creativity and innovation required to make it happen was incredibly important,” said Dwight James, S.V.P. of Customer Engagement and Loyalty at Delta and CEO of Delta Vacations. “We’re partnering with Amex to turn a piece of Delta history into a collectible that you can use in your everyday life. Delta Changes Skymiles Program, Restricts Lounge Access

From June 16 to August 3, 2022, customers can apply for Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business Card – while supplies last. Along with best-in-class travel benefits, it comes with access to exclusive content through an augmented reality experience that comes with a welcome kit. Created specifically for the design of the limited edition cards, the AR experience features Delta Ship #6307 and Boeing 747 history, flight stories and card transformations.

“This is the most unique card design Delta and Amex have created to date,” said Jon Gantman, SVP and general manager of Cobrand Product Management at American Express. “Turning the fuselage into metal that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use and function as a contactless credit card was a huge success. This special edition Boeing 747 card design is another way Delta and American Express continue to partner to bring unique products and experiences to Card Members.

The Boeing 747 reserve card began as Delta ship #6307, a now-retired Boeing 747-451. Known as the “Queen of the Skies” and the “Jumbo Jet” for its majestic presence and distinctive “hump,” the Boeing 747 pioneered many advancements in air travel and was a beloved part of Delta’s fleet.

The double-decker 747 revolutionized the industry; It was a major engineering advance over previous long-range aircraft in its speed, long-range capability, and large size. The aircraft marked the beginning of an era of more affordable international travel and included luxuries such as spiral staircases to the upper deck and separate piano bars.

Following the retirement of Delta’s 747 in 2017, Delta introduced the Airbus A350 to its fleet, one of the most advanced and fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft to date. The A350 is the first aircraft to feature Delta One Suite, the world’s first all-suite business class and enhanced cabin experience.

To begin the “wings-to-wallets” transformation, Delta’s teams reached out to the team at the Boneyard in Arizona, where the 747 has moved since retirement. The big question: Could the main body of the plane, the fuselage, be broken down and formed into metal that could be cut into a credit card?

After a year of research and development to ensure that the plane’s metal could function as a valid credit card that could withstand the daily wear and tear, a team of metalworkers began to take the plane apart. They then prepared the aluminum exterior so the material could be cleaned, machined and rolled into thin sheets to preserve its authenticity. The Boeing 747 Card is made of 25% aircraft metal and has polymer print layers to protect the aluminum, as well as an antenna that enables contactless payments.

At the same time, Delta and Amex worked on a sophisticated design that pays homage to the aircraft’s history and the 747’s distinctive shape. At every step, the teams took care to ensure that the card respected the retired aircraft’s history while giving it a new purpose through this project.

Delta And American Express Are Issuing Metal Credit Cards; Here’s Why

Delta Ship #6307 holds special meaning for many Delta customers and employees; This aircraft has transported US service men and women, evacuated travelers from Florida during Hurricane Irma, reunited families and friends, and transported travelers around the world.

The 747 was more than an iconic aircraft. It was a wedding setting, including flight attendant Holly R. and pilot Gene P., who married aboard Delta’s last 747 ferry in 2018.

The Queen of the Sky leaves a legacy that lives on in stories like this and, now, with a limited edition credit card design for your wallet. If you want to learn more about this iconic aircraft, visit the Boeing 747 exhibit at the Delta Flight Museum.

Delta’s co-branded American Express credit cards come with welcome bonuses to earn up to 50,000 SkyMiles. But the real cost of opening and keeping one of Delta’s credit cards can far outweigh the big mileage bonus.

Delta flights come with free checked bags, of course – a favorite perk for Delta flyers – plus priority boarding. But there are a few other overlooked benefits of Delta Amex cards – including the new 15% discount on SkyMiles bookings – that don’t get the attention they deserve. Use them correctly and you can unlock tons of extra value.

It’s a bit of a stretch to call a blanket 15% discount so underrated: it’s arguably the best perk Delta’s credit cards have right now. But it’s currently flying under the radar because it’s new, most travelers don’t even know about it yet, so we’re forced to pay attention to it.

Almost all Delta cardholders have access to TakeOff 15 benefits, which give you at least 15% off all Delta flights booked with SkyMiles when you book through Delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The discount is applied automatically, meaning you don’t have to wait for a statement credit or discount to appear on your account.

TakeOff 15 is available on both consumer and business versions of the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum and Reserve credit cards. The annual fee-only Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card will not see these discounts.

Almost no work is required on your part to redeem the 15% discount. As long as you hold one of the eligible cards and are logged into your Delta SkyMiles account, you should see the TakeOff 15 price automatically reflected in your SkyMiles award ticket search on Delta’s website or mobile app.

TakeOff 15 benefits can be used for any trip. So whether you book the cheapest basic economy award ticket or all the way up to a Delta One business class ticket, you should see the 15% discount applied. And there is no limit to how many times you can use it.

No matter which version of Delta credit cards you have, you’ll get 20% back in credit when you buy food, beverages and audio headphones while in-flight with Delta. Considering that alcoholic beverages cost about $10 on a Delta flight, paying with your Delta credit card will save you $2 (20% off).

Unfortunately, in-flight Wi-Fi is typically not eligible for this benefit, as the charge comes from Gogo Internet or Viasat Wi-Fi, not directly from Delta. But considering Delta now offers free Wi-Fi on most flights, that’s not a big deal.

There is no limit on the amount you can withdraw each year. It’s a great and easy way to improve your in-flight shopping experience.
