This is best sprayed over a rough silver base or sheet metal that can see through the color, other colors will give different color tones. The more coats applied, the darker and more intense the color. A light even coat is best with 50 to 60% overlap.

Our candy base coat needs to be mixed with our reducer at a ratio of 2 candy to 1 thinner and will dry with a matte finish.

Start by preparing the work in the usual way and wet flat with 800 wet and dry, do not break the primer.
Apply 2 to 3 even coats of base coat reduced by letting each one dull before applying the next, drying time will vary due to temperature, usage etc.
Apply the reduced candy in even light layers until the desired color is achieved again allowing each to become matte before applying the next.
If any fine line work is needed, let it dull and give it an hour or two first.

Most car users have been where we are now. There’s always that one project that seems to take a long time to complete—or in our case, to keep moving forward. You might think that being knee-deep in the industry would make building cars easier, but it’s not, and often times it makes it harder. So with my feeble and thinly veiled excuse for the absence of a good Project 50, we can now get down to the business of laying down the colors. But first a quick recap: the goal of this project was to turn a basket box 1969 Dodge Charger into a 50-state legal, pounding, tire-shredding monster with all modern drivetrain and suspension components while retaining the feel and style that made such a popular car even more 40 years ago. Months of “rough-in” work was done with 50 percent of the car’s raw metal replaced before it made its way to The Finer Details in Danville, Indiana. Shop owner Ken Mosier is known throughout the industry for producing award-winning restorations, so choosing a shop that will finish the Charger is easy.
Once our Chargers finally make it to Indiana, the crew at The Finer Details will spend countless hours on the body work to make sure the body is p-e-r-f-e-c-t before even a drop of paint is applied. When it comes to color, apparently there is a story too. The color of this car had changed at least half a dozen times prior to the phone conversation between your author and Mosier when he suggested Dodge’s new OE color “Jazz Blue Pearl,” a deep blue and dark pearl bordering on midnight blue. After seeing the colors for myself on the Charger at a local dealer, my decision was finally made.
There’s one problem: our partner in paint, Axalta, is not Dodge’s factory paint manufacturer. But don’t worry, the experts at Axalta say they can match any color, it just takes a few samples to get it perfect. Well, when sample number one arrived, we had that a-ha moment. It’s not a perfect match. It was better, and thus was born the name CBA (Custom-By-Accident). Is it medium blue? Dark blue? Purple? In any case, we only know two things: it’s beautiful, and it actually changes color depending on the light that hits it. Pure awesomeness! The folks at Axalta create unique colors for unique cars. It was the most beautiful blue I had ever seen. So let’s get it in the car!
The Finer Details painter extraordinaire, Jay Webb, spent weeks on the car to get the final result you see here. He uses a methodical and time-consuming process he calls “top drawer,” and it produces a show car finish that pictures don’t do justice. Mosier says that this is the same meticulous process that he and his team use when they restore vehicles to compete for awards. They definitely know what they are doing; over the years The Finer Details has collected a number of top awards in performance at major events across the country. And we can see why!
Car Wrap Vs Paint: The Pros And Cons
Instead of going the traditional adhesive route for the back strip, we opted to paint one on the car. This means more work but it will also give a smooth finish to the rear of the car. The first step in the whole painting process (once the car is properly masked) is to put on a couple of coats of our backstripe color, a silver pearl that isn’t too red.
The silver then needs to dry completely before the back strip design can be attached. Band sizes are factory, but we left the usual R/T symbols on both sides. We feel that everyone with a custom Charger slaps some lettering on that particular area.
Finer Details painter Jay Webb mixed Axalta base in custom colors for our crash. Let’s call it “Krispy Kreme Blueberry.” Jay uses Axalta’s Chromapremier Pro System, which is a primer, sealer and clear coat system designed to help increase productivity without compromising the final appearance.
Webb painted the car in several stages. First, he covered the whole car from the rear firewall, and shot the engine part.

Once the engine compartment was complete, he closed it and turned his attention to the rest of the car including the rear and roof.
Notice how he works from top to bottom. He used a smooth motion, always keeping the tip of the gun at the same distance from the surface no matter the angle or place he had to hit. This is a learned skill and there is definitely an art to it.
With the initial coat laid out you can really get an idea of how covering the back strip will work. Note that the trunk does not rest on the car. Then it will be fastened in place and adjusted so that all three components of the back band are perfectly aligned. Webb will use the same procedure on the stem that he did on the quarters—spray silver, mask, then spray blue.
Before the clear coat was applied, the car had a matte finish on it, however you can really see at this point the quality of Axalta’s paint and the skill with which it was applied.
Audis That Show Why Custom Paint Is Always Best
With the clear coat applied, you can really tell that the color is something special and will show once finished.
Another subtle departure from stock is the fact that we painted the entire rear TV panel (as the NASCAR boys call it!) in body color.
Clouds of spray filled the paint booth as Webb applied the final coat of Axalta Chromapremier.
Before the clear coat, you can see that the door looks the same as the initial picture of the whole body.

Once the paint had dried and cured, Webb began the wet sanding process. Normally, a shop would do three steps from here to remove the paint, but Webb uses a five-step process of sanding and filing. He started with 600 grit paper, shown here. He would then progress through 800, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3,000 to produce a mirror-like finish.
Webb spends three full days on each quarter panel just sanding and thinning in a process he calls “top drawer.” Most stores are not that thorough.
Scott Dowdy, who did all the body work on the car, was also in action, helping Webb by sanding and polishing the smoothed firewall.
The car sits on a lift that Mosier’s men use specifically for the bottom layer. A heavy-duty paper mask covers and protects all of Webb’s hard work.
