I’ve always been interested in making my own custom pieces out of fiberglass and as it turns out, it’s super easy to do and the sky is the limit on what you can come up with. Now, laying down the fiberglass is really the easy part. The difficult thing is finding the mold. Interestingly, a video posted on YouTube by ZRCarbon does a great job highlighting the step-by-step procedures for creating your own molds to replicate parts. In this case, it is the seat cover of a Ducati Panigale, handcrafted in carbon fibre.

If you want to make molds of some parts, you must immediately have the courage to even cover them with resin, running the risk of ruining them slightly. The video shows extensive use of a release agent which, as the name suggests, helps release the part from the mold. At the beginning of the video, however, the Ducati emblem on the seat cover had to be sanded flush to get a smooth mold.

Then comes the most interesting part. A group of carbon fiber mats are stretched over the mold and subjected to a process called debulking before being allowed to harden. Now, the purpose of debulking is to expel air trapped between the layers of carbon fiber, thus increasing the overall strength of the part. It does this by drawing a void on the layers, as seen in the video. The process can be repeated several times if necessary.

In this particular video, the seat cover is made using dry carbon, which actually refers to the manufacturing process. Laid sheets are called pre-preg carbon, or pre-impregnated carbon fiber, where the resin and hardener have already been incorporated into the carbon fiber sheet. This is why the whole process seems as simple as rolling out a bunch of stickers, but there’s actually a lot more going on behind the scenes.
