My cat Osito is a destroyer of sofas. He loves nothing more than a good scratch on the corner of the couch. Over the years, those claws have shredded two separate couches. So when I bought an expensive new couch, I had serious concerns about how it would perform under Osito.

The Sofa Scratcher saved the corner of my new sofa from tearing like its predecessors. Not only did this protect the sofa from Osito, but it also gave him an alternative surface to claw at in the center of the living room, something cats instinctively gravitate towards.

The manufacturer sent me a Sofa Scratcher to test for our guide to the best cat furniture protectors. This ingenious product is a sofa protector and a scratching post in one. It is 24 inches tall with two sisal-covered surfaces 5.5 inches wide that form a 90-degree angle. A clear polycarbonate base attached to the bottom of the post slides under the legs of the couch to secure the scratcher and keep it flush with the corner of the couch. The back of the Sofa Scratcher is covered with felt to protect the upholstery underneath.

When the 6lb couch scratcher is secured under the leg of the couch, it is sturdy enough to not move when my 12lb cat and his claws are at their best. Once it arrived, it only required the simplest of assembly – inserting three screws to secure the base to the post – which took me less than five minutes.

The Sofa Scratcher is available in seven colors to match your sofa. If your sofa has rounded corners instead of square, there is a semi-circle sofa scraper for a better fit. Unfortunately, if your cat’s favorite place to scratch is couch cushions or the upper arm, a couch scratcher won’t help much.

Sofa Scratcher saved my sofa. Since installing this furniture protector last fall, Osito’s claws haven’t touched the upholstery, with one exception: He can still get about 2 inches of the corner of the couch that sticks out above the scratcher. But even though he can still access that small part when he scratches, he can’t sink his claws in and shred it like he could when the whole arm was exposed. For cats that may dig in this open area, a small piece of Sticky Paws scratch tape can deter them from this behavior.

Sofa Scratcher has proven itself well. Although it has a few loose strands of sisal in the places Osito likes to scratch the most, it doesn’t look shabby after a year of use. It’s just as effective at distracting him from scratching the sofa upholstery today as it was when we first got him.

I wish I had found the Sofa Scratcher years ago when Osito started chipping his first of two sofas. It would have saved me a ton of money, not to mention the pain of helplessly watching my furniture slowly crumble.
