The need for a car paint repair is inevitable. All cars will have marks, chips and scratches, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave them there. Deep scratches reduce the protection that a paintwork provides to the vehicle. This leaves the metal exposed to possible corrosion.

Ways To Cover Scratches: 10 Easy Ways For Black Car

The most common paint used by factories on vehicles today is catalyzed enamel with a clear coat. Touch-up paint, however, whether applied by a dealership, yourself, or a body shop, will be lacquer.

Unlike enamel, all lacquer-based paints, whether clear, colored or primer, shrink as they dry. So while these repairs can be done at home with minimal research and cost, a reputable dealership or repair shop can provide a professional-looking result.

Dealerships can charge up to $50 – $300 for just 2 ounces of VIN-matching paint and another $500 or more to actually repair a major scratch. Even a small scratch will usually cost at least $150 – $200. Oftentimes, a repair shop can perform the work cheaper than a dealership.

There are three different types of scratch paint repairs used by body shops. The following methods can fix deep scratches on your car bumper, depending on your vehicle, as well as other areas of your car.

How To Remove Scratches From Your Car Bumper

This is the cheapest option in the workshop, but it has its drawbacks. The shop will start by using your VIN number to match the precise color. But matching the color doesn’t guarantee a perfect match in the finish and feel of the repair compared to the rest of the car.

But if your biggest concern is monetary and the scratch isn’t in a noticeable area, this may be the right solution for you.

This is a quick and cheap solution. It is often preferred when it comes to flat colors. It is a technique widely used in dealerships to cover faults in used vehicles.

Both airbrushing and touch-up painting are considered short-term solutions (~2 years) and can peel over time. But again, you can’t beat the price.

A complete repair is often required for metallic or pearlescent finishes. This is the most permanent solution. It is a more complicated and expensive process that involves many layers of sanding, priming, filling, wet sanding and finally painting and is done on an entire panel at a time.

A cheaper alternative for many coats is to have the shop use a base coat/clear coat combination. A combined base/clear coat can cost between $600 and $700. You can also cut costs by doing some or all of the work yourself if you’re willing to invest some time.

Paintless dent repair (PDR) is an inexpensive and quick method used when the factory paint is not damaged. Dents and dings can usually be repaired in about an hour and the cost is usually only half that of a paint repair. PDR has many advantages, but cannot be performed in some cases where the marks are very deep or where the paint is cracked.

The location of the dent could also be a factor in determining whether PDR would work. Repairs can range from less than $75 to several hundred dollars.

Paint Scratch Repair Cost

This article provides more information about how much it costs to repair deep scratches and dents on your car. The answer? It can be as expensive or economical as your wallet and aesthetic tendencies require. Whether you’re trying to repair deep scratches on your car’s bumper or repair deep scratches in other areas of your vehicle, your auto repair shop should have an option for you. Maybe you put it there, maybe someone (or something) did. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it sure makes your nice, shiny toy look a little less magnificent. If you’ve never had to deal with this before, you’re probably wondering, “How much does car paint repair cost?” There are a few factors that influence what this number will be in your specific situation, and I’ll break it down for you!

The first question you need to answer is what type of damage your vehicle has. Below is a list of the most common types of paint damage. Once you’re sure what you’re dealing with, we’ll move on to how much the repair will cost.

Smaller: Only on the varnish (if it gets wet, it disappears for a moment) and no more than 15 centimeters.

Extensive: Deeper scratches that go beyond the varnish and reach the paint itself, or even the metal. Scratches that span more than 6 inches are also extensive.

Minor: Contained in a relatively small area and only on the surface of the paint (no metal can be seen). Some small scratches can even be transferred from the thing your vehicle rubbed against and can be easily removed with just rubbing compound and a microfiber cloth.

Extensive: Scratches that have deformed the surface of the car itself, covered a larger area, or completely removed the paint are considered extensive.

If there is paint damage on top of a dent, you will want to repair the dent before painting so that the paint is not affected by the dent repair process.

Extensive: Dents on a curved surface require a little more skill to repair. A dent may not be fixable if the metal is completely bent, such as on a bumper that has been crushed.

How Do Body Shops Fix Deep Car Scratches?

If the damage to your vehicle’s paint covers a large area and is quite deep, you may want to spray it instead of touching it up.

If you have moderate damage to a vertical surface (like a car door), you can use mobile spray painting services. This will cost between $200 and $400 and may be your best option for multi-panel damage.

If your vehicle’s moderate to extensive damage is on a horizontal surface (like the hood), is too much for touch-up or mobile spray painting, or if you just prefer it to look like new, you’ll need a body shop.

The differentiation between horizontal and vertical surfaces has to do with dust and other particles that settle on the car. It is almost impossible to prevent particles from interfering with a spray painting on horizontal surfaces outside of a controlled environment. That’s why it’s best to take your car to a repair shop with access to a clean, well-ventilated room specifically for this purpose.
