Last Wednesday, as I was driving to my designated parking spot at my apartment complex I noticed that the trunk and bumper of my car were damaged and I had no notes left. I hadn’t used my car since Saturday evening, so it could have happened any time in between. Looking for advice regarding the situation.

I filed a police/collision report and notified the property manager, who checked the cameras, but the camera was too far away.

Hit And Run Insurance: Claims & Coverage

I also filed a claim with my insurance company. Right now, they are saying it is collision insurance, but I am hoping that after receiving the police report it will at least be determined as an uninsured/underinsured coverage. (I live in WA)

I have placed my cat camera on my window from where I can see cars and the parking lot. (One neighbor I spoke to had a camera outside his window as well.)

Now, I suspect that one of my neighbors did it. Across the parking lot, there’s a big truck that pulls up. When he backs up, the front of his truck hits my spot, but I don’t see any damage on his steel front bumper plate. Given the severity of the damage, I’d say it was a truck. I can’t believe that he even realized that his truck had hit my car.

The insurance company estimated the damage at $950 (less the collision deductible of $50), so I plan to get a second estimate since it seems lower than I expected. If the insurance company agrees it is a hit and run, it will meet the $300 deductible.

I have verbally asked two neighbors if they saw anything. I’m thinking of leaving a note on some neighbors’ doors (including neighbors with oversized trucks) asking if anything happened. Do you think this is a good idea?

I sympathize with you and I think you did the right thing. At this point, if it were me, I’d probably stop one day, and pay for the repair myself. Going looking for the guilty party wouldn’t be worth my time, and it’s not a good fit for me. I also doubt that this will lead to anything meaningful, I assume the results are unlikely to change anything, i.e. you don’t know anything.

And one last thing, don’t let it get to you. The other driver may or may not have noticed this. Make things right and move on from it.

This is something that is really disappointing to me. One day my wife’s car was hit in front of our house. There wasn’t even a note, but the paint on it was just worn off, no serious damage. We didn’t bother to fix it because I thought it would happen again. This is one of the reasons I won’t buy a new car. If it’s $1,000 or less, I’ll pay to fix it and be done. I wouldn’t want my insurance to cover this if it didn’t have to be.

Forget the insurance company’s estimate, take it to a reputable body shop and ask them for an estimate.

I would chalk this up as a cost of living in an apartment complex and take no further steps other than repairing the damage if it would shorten/reduce the life of the car or impede my ability to use the rear trunk. I lived in various apartment buildings for a decade and things like this happened frequently.

I have some damage to my rear bumper. But there was a lot of broken glass and plastic that didn’t belong to my car. I suspect the other car is in worse condition.

I just moved on. I could file police reports, find witnesses, find cameras, etc. and still have a very slim chance of finding a suspect. But I did not pay any attention to it.

I didn’t even fix the bumper. it is what it is. This is a 10 year old car, 150k miles. And I drive it like a tank.

Sorry this happened to you, but, no, I won’t be asking everyone what they saw and playing detective. Anecdotally, my neighbor chased a man who hit his car on the interstate and ran away. This resulted in him suffering a torn rotator cuff that would require surgery and 12 weeks of rehabilitation (not the hit and run, the subsequent altercation in which he was thrown to the ground). I guess you could just go the insurance route. Cameras are a good idea in general. I suggest strong defense but not attack. In other words, figure out how to keep it from happening again.

The parking damage without any note happened when I lived in an apartment. There is nothing you can do. Strangely it didn’t bother me that much – just a little irritating. My car was about 4 years old at that time, 100k+ miles.

It’s things like this that don’t make me spend money on expensive cars. It’s unfortunate that this happens, but on an expensive car it would bother me more. I once had someone break into my front bumper and my car was only a few weeks old.

I went to Home Depot. I came out and noticed that my left rear quarter panel was severely dented. No note. I called Allstate and they told me this falls under an aggravated violation on my auto policy. “My car was parked,” I argued. My driving record was tainted and my rates went up.

When we were in college my wife (then at gf’s house) parked the car on the street. There was a big dent in the rear quarter panel. We had pizza delivered and some people came. I checked at the pizza place myself and found a vehicle that could have been it. I called the police and by the time they got to the pizza place, that worry was over. I never saw the car there again. (I started making it a part of my drives every day) I used a gallon of bondo to repair it and eventually sold it for a motor (Honda Prelude SI)

O.P. This should be clearly stated under your uninsured motorist coverage. The deductible in my state will be zero. Doesn’t WA limit the deductible to $300?

I agree that you probably won’t find the guilty party. However, since I am quite young, I will put up a notice in a public area urging caution in the parking lot and indirectly shaming the unknown culprit for their act.
