Having recently found myself in this predicament, I spent the last week researching digital nomad visas for our trip to Asia. In this article, I will share what I found. It’s not as cut and dry as you think!
Some countries allow you to do certain jobs on a tourist visa, while others are more strict. So let’s dive in and find out. This article will focus mainly on Southeast Asian countries.
Cambodia Visa For Uk Citizens
To work in Cambodia as a freelancer, you will need a business visa. EB Visa covers the needs of most expats, freelancers and volunteers during their stay in Cambodia. This visa does not apply to you if you want to work for a company in Cambodia. You will need an EG visa for this.
Visa Requirements For Cambodia
If you work in a country for a company located outside of Cambodia, you must still obtain an EB visa. If you are self-employed, you can report your work to Cambodia.
You can apply for an e-Visa to enter Cambodia or collect your visa at the airport. If you travel on business or do any work remotely, apply for an E visa, not a T visa.
The visa is initially valid for 30 days. Later you can extend this for 6-12 months for a fee. The costs are as follows:
If you do not work in the territory, you can go to Cambodia on a tourist visa.

Despite all these issues, you can still travel to China on a remote work freelancer visa and experience all the incredible beauty that China has to offer.
Unfortunately, China does not have an official digital nomadic visa. It is forbidden to work remotely in China without the correct one. To run a business, you need to get an M visa. For confirmation, you also need a company to support you in this process. This means that if you are self-employed, you will need to set up a company.
To apply for a visa, it is also recommended to apply 1-2 months before your visit to allow time for the application to be processed and your stay to be approved.
I recommend that you consult a lawyer for this visa as it is the most difficult Asian Digital Nomad Visa to obtain.
Passports & Visas
You don’t need a special visa to work in India as a digital nomad. Provided you do not enter into an agreement with an Indian entity. If you have a business outside of India, you can work on it while on a tourist visa. If you want to stay longer, you will need an e-business visa.
Obtaining a tourist visa is a fairly simple process for most nationalities. However, if you’re from the UK (like me) you can’t use the Visa online portal. The visa process is outsourced to VFSGlobal and you will need to apply there.
You will need a business visa. To get one of them, you need to apply online on the E-Visa portal. If you’re from the UK, you’ll have to use VFSGlobal.
To apply for a business or tourist visa to India, you must apply 4 days before processing. However, we advise you to do this 30 days in advance, as they may be rejected. You cannot apply earlier than 30 days before your date of arrival in India.

B211A tourist visa (30 days stay, extendable to 60 days, $35 upon arrival, $50 single entry, $100 multiple entry) –
Indonesia has an official digital nomadic visa – a second residence visa. It requires proof of more than $130,000 and includes a maximum stay of 10 years with extensions. This is the best way for digital nomads to work in Bali – the B112A visa. This allows you to visit and work in Bali for up to 6 months, as confirmed by the Prime Minister of Indonesia.
If you want to stay longer than the 30-day period that your tourist visa allows, you need to get a business visa to do so. This is a B112a visa that can be extended for up to 180 days of stay in the country. This is a single entry visa, meaning you cannot go and come back as you please. You must apply for a B112a visa each time you intend to leave and return.

A tourist visa is valid for 30 days and you can extend it to 60, leave and then come back to start another application. But after 60 days you have to leave and you are not allowed to come back for 90 days.
You will need to have a tourist visa to get the Digital Nomad Visa when it comes out. You can either collect this on arrival at the airport or use the online eVisa portal.

Once the details are released to Visa, you will need to have a regular passport, passport size photos and proof of income outside of Indonesia.

EVisa (30 days, $4.7), eNTRI (15 days, $4.7) Multiple entry visa (must apply in person at the embassy) –
Malaysia has just released its digital nomadic visa. To get it, you need to prove $24,000 per year. It is valid for 6 months after a successful application and is valid for multiple entries for 3-12 months, renewable for a further 12 months. The Digital Nomad Visa costs MYN 1,000 and allows dependents of MYN 500 each.
You can also travel to Malaysia for business purposes that do not involve paid work in the country using a tourist visa. If you want to work in Malaysia, you will need an EP work permit or a PVP permit.
There is no more information about Malaysia, about the visa you will need for a long stay. All sources recommend contacting your local Malaysian embassy to apply for other visas.

The cost of a tourist visa is one of the lowest I have found at 20 Malaysian Ringgit.
Also, UK citizens do not need a visa to visit Malaysia. You can travel the country for 3 months without a visa.
There is no digital nomadic visa for South Korea yet. However, South Korea is working on a special visa for digital nomads called the “workcation” Visa, which will be available sometime in 2023. This will allow you to stay in the country for up to 2 years. Currently, remote workers are not allowed to work in South Korea on a tourist visa. To stay in Korea longer as a freelancer, you will need an F2 visa.
To get an F-2-7 visa, you need to score 80-120 on a scoring system that takes into account your income, your level of university education, your level of Korean language proficiency, etc. Applying for this visa as a US citizen will cost you $160. To ease the journey to South Korea, many digital nomads can use the H-1 visa. This is a working holiday visa and in order to get it you have to sign an agreement stating that you are going to get a short-term job in Korea to finance your stay.
Whether the authorities will consider this issue or not is a matter of debate. However, I would never recommend you to get this visa and not follow the rules.
Many digital nomads have reported traveling to Korea with this visa without any issues, but governments can crack down at any time and you could be blacklisted from the country.
To get a work permit, you must work for a South Korean company or a company that has a branch in South Korea. The company you work for can sponsor you for a visa.

In addition, you can additionally apply for a D-10 visa. This is a visa that allows you to look for work while you are in Korea. However, this visa has a strict application process and you must prove that you have the skills to get a job in a South Korean company.
The last visa used by travelers is the E-2 visa. This is for English teachers and is the most popular digital nomad visa in South Korea and the easiest to get. To get this visa, you will need a bachelor’s degree and sponsorship from a company.
Unfortunately, if you’re a freelancer, the F-2 visa is your only option until South Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa has more information.
