Buff Out Scratches On Rims – I bought a slightly used set of 19” Acura RDX wheels for my wife’s Honda CR-V. I have always liked these wheels and have been waiting for a good deal to come out. I saw this one was on sale and jumped on it. The dealer was two hours away so before I made the trip, I asked the dealer if there were any other marks or curb marks. The seller said it was in “brand new condition”. I was disappointed when I got there because it was full of bruises and scrapes. Thankfully there are no curb marks.
As a detailer, I wanted to make the wheels look as good as possible to try to eliminate imperfections. Thankfully I had a bottle of McKee’s 37 Complete Swirl Remover. I tried using this product along with a microfiber towel. I used a microfiber towel as an applicator (instead of a foam pad) because I want it to be as gentle as possible.

The product was very easy to use. It seemed to take a long time to work even though I wasn’t using the machine. Removing the residue was also easy. The color of the product is white and the consistency is on the thicker side like normal compounds. It doesn’t have much of a scent to it and I’m thankful for that. There are some compounds out there that smell like gas or heavy chemicals. The product didn’t get dusty either but then again, I wasn’t using a polisher.

I know this isn’t your typical show and shine because I’m not working on car paint but I wanted to share the results because I’m blown away! I would say I was able to remove 95% of the imperfections. There were a few left but they were there because the cracks were too thick or the paint had been chipped. And I got this with very little effort.
I’m looking forward to using this to tune my wife’s car in the near future. It’s hard to find time when you’re taking care of a two-year-old. No, I’m not a bad driver and this hopefully won’t happen again. It was a mistake – my friend was sick and I had to make a quick turn so she wouldn’t get thrown in my car.
Rim Scratched Up. How Do I Fix This?
The rim doesn’t look that bad. The biggest danger is likely to come from driving conditions that can push a bent edge into the wheel. Even if this happens, I doubt it would cause a blowout, although it would shorten the life of the tire.
I can’t tell if there’s any damage to the side of the wheel itself from your photo – I’d rotate the section around the wheel and check for any deep gouges and punctures that might cause concern.
The next thing you need to do is read the terms of your lease, and see what your obligations are. Sh*t happens, and this is included in the rental company’s calculations. You will not lose your license or be thrown in jail for this. I also doubt that this would be a reason for them to stop the deal.
You can try to fix it yourself, but unless you are skilled at this type of thing, it will be obvious when you take the car back and they do their inspection. They will be more offended by deception than by actual error.

That being said, I doubt anyone would expect the entire tire to be replaced, and in fact it could end up costing you more if you go out and buy a new tire instead of doing whatever the rental company wants.
Don’t waste your money on this repair, it’s cosmetic, but until yours is almost finished, you don’t have to worry about damage. My advice is to put the real money aside, call Mazda lease corp. if your lease is 3 months from the end, ask them to check the car for damage and don’t mention this issue again. Chances are: they won’t notice this little thing. P.S. wash off paint spills a.s.a.p. or it WILL cause damage that the rental company will want! edit* P.P.S Most new car buyers get some sort of “leg protection / guarantee / warranty” BEFORE YOU HAVE DONE THIS…(pothole!) and they would give you a new tire too!
