Az Minimum Auto Insurance Coverage – Americans spend a lot of money each year on car insurance. One reason is that state governments set minimum amounts of insurance that drivers must purchase in order to legally drive a car. Our latest video breaks down the 3 most important types of auto insurance: property damage, accident bodily injury, and personal injury.
State governments require minimum insurance coverage for several obvious reasons. If you’re going to drive a vehicle, there’s a chance you could injure someone or damage someone’s property. If a driver does not have insurance (or a lot of money) and causes an accident, the injured parties cannot recover anything for their losses. Without insurance minimums, there would be many more accident liability claims and compensation. We gathered these minimum insurance thresholds by state from The Balance. Keep in mind that some states also require minimum coverage for uninsured and underinsured drivers.

Our image shows how most states meet the generally accepted coverage standard. For example, 32 states require $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, while 31 states require $50,000 in bodily injury coverage per accident. What does this mean? Imagine a car accident where 2 people are injured, each with $30,000 in medical bills, or a total of $60,000. An insurance policy with these minimum coverage amounts would only pay $25,000 per victim, or $50,000 in total. The driver will be responsible for the remaining $10,000.
Ducey Vetoes Bill Requiring Arizona Drivers To Raise Liability Insurance Minimum
There are some exceptions where states require much more (or much less) coverage than others. 19 states require drivers to carry at least $25,000 in property damage, but California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts only require $5,000. Maine and Alaska mandate at least $100,000 in coverage for bodily injury per accident. to just $25,000 in Delaware.
There are many reasons why you should carry more than the state minimum. For starters in 2019 the average new car price was $36,718. If you have minimal insurance and damage someone else’s brand new vehicle, you could be financially ruined. Also, car accidents happen all the time. More than 20,000 people die each year in approximately 5 million accidents. Getting full coverage can be expensive. Our guide to car insurance can help you think through all the options.
