In terms of documentation, China is very strict about bringing a lot of documents around the world when you apply for a visa.

Passengers should apply for visa exemption for border transit in China on their own or with the support of the responsible airline. Visa-free transit requires an entry permit issued by the border control authorities. Citizens of the 53 countries listed in 144-hour transit visa exemption 2.1, holding valid travel documents and confirmed air tickets to a third country or region within 144 hours, can stay in the following cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and the following cities and provinces: Jiangsu, Zhejiang , Liaoning, no Chinese visa required. The hotels hosting these tourists are responsible for registering them. Passengers who have not checked into the hotel must register at the local police station or foreigner service station within 24 hours after arrival.

After what I have experienced over the past few years, I am no longer keen on traveling to China again.
