A few weeks ago, American Express announced that it would be adding mobile phone protection to several premium cards. However, there is an interesting twist that is worth keeping in mind if you plan to use this bonus.
Amex Platinum Cell Phone Coverage
Before we get into the meat of the matter, let’s go over Amex’s definition of “cell phone protection.”
American Express Adding Cell Phone Protection To Several Premium Cards
Effective April 1, 2021, if a Cardholder’s mobile phone is stolen or damaged, including a cracked screen, they may be reimbursed for repair or replacement costs on up to two approved claims, up to a maximum of $800 per claim or $1,600 per claim. a 12-month period if their phone line is listed on their wireless bill and the previous month’s wireless bill was paid by an Eligible Card Account. Each approved claim is eligible for a $50 deductible. Which Amex cards qualify for cell phone coverage?
This is an especially nice incentive for people who are considering applying for Delta American Express’s large welcome card offers (although Gold cards are not eligible for this offer).
What was interesting, however, was that the American Express® Gold Card is not one of the eligible cards – even though it carries the same annual fee as both Delta Platinum Amexs cards (personal and business versions).
I asked PR Amex whether the qualifying card must cover the entire cell phone bill. For example, I currently pay a $20 monthly wireless bill for the Delta Reserve Business Amex card because it comes with a $20 credit. I use the Business Platinum Card® from American Express to pay off the balance thanks to the 5X Membership Rewards promotion.

(I typically pay my cell phone bill with Ink Cash, which offers 5X Ultimate Rewards points on purchases with a wireless service provider, up to $25,000 a year in total spending).
If, God forbid, I have to use coverage to pay for a screen repair or replacement, I’m curious if I’m covered.
A spokesperson for PR Amex said: “Each claim will need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on the information provided when completing the claim. To be eligible for cell phone coverage, Cardmembers must use an eligible Amex Card account to pay their monthly wireless bills.
That you must pay your entire bill with a qualifying card, but nothing in that language

Indicates as much. Now, if I split the payments between two qualifying Amex cards, I think I would have a strong argument that I should be reimbursed for any damages (and again, this is the worst-case scenario).
However, keep in mind that if you deposit the minimum amount on a qualifying Amex card and the balance on an ineligible card, you may not receive the benefit. So keep this in mind when paying your bill.

This could come in the form of a cracked screen – thanks to the laws of gravity – or worse, a wet or stolen device. Fortunately, over the last few years, more credit cards have emerged that offer cell phone protection. For example, in 2019, Mastercard added this benefit to the World and World Elite cards.

Deep Dive: Is The Platinum Card Annual Fee Worth It?
To qualify for coverage, you must first be a cardholder of one of the products listed above. In addition, the cardholder’s telephone line must be listed on the wireless bill and the previous month’s bill must be paid on an eligible Amex card account.
Amex notes that coverage covers screen damage, which is not typically covered by insurance. Repair or replacement costs may be refunded in the event of theft or other damage.
You are entitled to a maximum of two approved claims with a maximum amount of $800 per claim or $1,600 for a 12-month period. There is also a $50 deductible for each approved claim. Eligible cardholders can apply by calling the number on the back of their card.
If you have a Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card or a Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (as of January 1, 2021), the deal is even sweeter.

In addition to Mastercard World and World Elite cards (like the Citi Prestige® Card), another popular credit card that offers cell phone protection is the Chase Ink Business Preferred® credit card.
