Amex Platinum Benefits Cell Phone – Starting April 1, 2021, select Amex cards have cell phone protection. Eligible cards include Centurion cards (individuals and businesses), Platinum cards (including co-branded Platinum business and consumer variants), Delta Platinum (individuals and businesses), and Delta Reserve (consumer and businesses). Strangely, in my opinion, the $450 Bonvoy Brilliant and Hilton Aspire cards are missing from the list. I’m also a little surprised not to see the Gold Card or Business Gold Card listed.
Cell phone protection is already available from many other credit cards (see: Credit Card Cell Phone Insurance Comparison), but it’s great to see Amex joining the party. Keep in mind that this is different from purchase protection (which Amex also offers). Amex Purchase Protection covers damage, loss or theft for 90 days from purchase. Nick had great luck using their purchase protection with a phone that broke shortly after purchase. Cell phone protection, on the other hand, is always available as long as you pay your wireless bill with your eligible card. With purchase protection there is no deductible, but with cell phone coverage they impose a $50 deductible per claim. If Amex itself handles cell phone protection complaints the same way it does with purchase protections, that’s fantastic news: According to many testimonials, it’s usually much better to work with Amex and with third-party insurers.

A new phone is a great joy in life, probably even more so than it should be. Dropping it – not so much.
There’s no quicker way to wipe the smile off your face than dropping the phone on the first day while trying to put on the screen protector. Fears of losing the phone, damaging it further, or dropping it down the toilet forever also remain, but Amex has a compelling new reason to pay your phone bill with its cards, eliminating most of the worry.

Deep Dive: Is The Platinum Card Annual Fee Worth It?
This one is pretty clear. For Amex cell phone coverage to apply to your card, you must have paid the bill for that phone with your eligible American Express card. This means that in practice, it’s best to automatically pay your phone bill with your Amex card, so that it’s always the case if something happens.
You can read the full terms and conditions of American Express’ new cell phone coverage policy here. Basically, as long as the card account is open and up to date, you didn’t intentionally cause the damage, and you’re not renting the phone, you should be fine.
Amex has been busy in the last year adding limited-time benefits, such as fee credits for streaming services, cell phone bills, delivery and more. The Platinum Card also benefits from exclusive airfare discounts on domestic travel within the United States, which has proven to be a huge success.
There’s no doubt that many people would happily trade in the credit card benefits they hope they’ll never need so they can travel freely and safely again, but it may not be long before you benefit from the two, and cell phone protection is here to stay. If there was an argument for using your Amex card to pay your cell phone bill, this would be it.

It’s not always bad news when a bank changes its credit card benefits. One of these new benefits saved my family $350 after dropping and breaking a cell phone.

By simply paying your wireless phone bill with one of these cards, you’ll be covered in case of damage, including cracked screens or even if your phone is stolen.
