Amex Business Platinum Dell Credit – American Express recently launched a series of cash back offers for its Business Platinum and Business Gold cardholders. This is how I try to maximize one of them to generate as much money as possible.
This is a generous deal. If you spend more than £150 at Dell before August 27, you’ll get £150 cashback.

Unfortunately, we do not need IT equipment at the moment. I decided that the best way to maximize this deal was to buy something for around £150 and then resell it on eBay.
How Hard Is It To Get The Amex Business Platinum Card?
This should be treated sensibly. For example, the purchase of a monitor was accompanied by many problems – they are easily damaged in transit, and they are bulky and expensive to transport. This was no way to go.
I also wanted to spend as close to £150 as possible to minimize my out-of-pocket costs.
This is a UK Dell USB 3.0 Ultra HD D3100 Triple Video Docking Station. I had absolutely no idea what it did, although the description says “Dell Docking Station – USB 3.0 connects your laptop to up to three additional displays, various external devices and the Internet with a single cable.”
It cost £128.94 plus VAT with free delivery, so the total cost was £154.72 (£4.72 over the magic £150 threshold to start cashback)

Seconds after placing the order, I received an email from Amex confirming that I had been activated with £150 cashback:

I haven’t sold the unit yet, so this is still a work in progress. However, I will show you what I have done so far.
EBay has always been the best place to sell this. eBay allows you to simulate listings run by others. This made it easy to get my product listed. The package arrived as scheduled on Wednesday the 8th and it took me less than 10 minutes to get the eBay listing.

You can see my eBay listing (still running) here where you can clone it. Go to my listing and on the left, click where it says “Have one for sale?” click. Sell it yourself”. You will be redirected to the listing form with all data pre-filled. There is practically nothing for you to do except set the price.
EBay recommended it for £109. I went for £99 plus £5 postage. Amazon was charging £119.
This was for the “Buy Now” listing. I could have held an auction but I was happy to pull it out and hope for £99. As other ‘buy it now’ sellers were asking as much as the £150 I paid, even though they had ‘professional stores’ on eBay, I was hoping this one would sell.
If not, I haven’t missed anything. Second hand units sell for around £60 so I’m sure if I drop from £99 to £75 it will sell quickly.

In the end, I estimate I spent no more than 90 minutes on the whole process, 60 of which would be a casual walk to the post office and back, which I’m happy to pass off as exercise.
