American Express Purchase Protection Lost Item
Purchase protection may not be top of mind as a credit card benefit for many, but it can be a valuable benefit. In general, purchase protection is a broad term that can mean any type of additional coverage for purchases made with a particular credit card. And some of the best travel credit cards offer it.

Although this is a lesser-known benefit, purchase protection can be very valuable and a great reason to use your Amex cards for your next big purchase.
In this post, I’ll discuss the different types of purchase protection — purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty coverage. I’ll also give you my thoughts on the best American Express credit cards for purchase protection and how to use them for maximum value and protection.
The first and most direct benefit is simply called “purchase protection”. According to the American Express website, Purchase Protection can protect your purchases for up to 90 days from the date of purchase in case your purchase is stolen or accidentally damaged.
This means that if you buy the latest iPhone and then accidentally drop it and break the screen within 90 days of purchase, you have the right to file a Purchase Protection claim to get your phone repaired. How amazing is that?! I personally used this feature (for this exact scenario, oops!) a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised at how simple the process was.

Fortunately, every Amex card offers this purchase protection, with a slight variation in the maximum claim amount included depending on the card you have.
With most Amex cards, purchase protection can be applied for claims up to $1,000 per event and up to a maximum of $50,000 per card member per calendar year. But with premium Amex cards, the limit is up to $10,000 per claim with the same annual limit of $50,000. Terms and conditions apply.
Be sure to check the individual limits of each card if you plan to rely on this benefit. Some of the best Amex cards that offer purchase protection include:

There are some purchases that are excluded for purchase protection — things like antiques, motor vehicles, live animals or cash-like equivalents. See Amex’s list of exclusions for a complete list.
Filing a claim is relatively simple, but the process can sometimes be lengthy. The easiest way to file a claim is online at AmericanExpress.com/onlineclaim or you can always call Amex directly to file your claim at 1-800-322-1277.
Similar to purchase protection, return protection is another valuable offering included with certain American Express cards, mostly premium cards like the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Simply put, return protection allows you to return an item when the store where you bought the item doesn’t want to take it back. As long as you’re within 90 days of your purchase date, Amex offers an extra layer of protection in the form of return protection.

Refunds are limited to $300 per refund and a maximum of $1,000 per cardmember per calendar year. And no enrollment is required — chargeback protection is automatically included with every purchase made with an eligible Amex credit card.
Certain items are excluded from return protection, similar to those not covered by purchase protection. This includes things like live animals, unique items, perishable goods, and more. For more details, see the full list of exceptions here.
Similar to Purchase Protection, the best way to file a Return Protection claim is online at AmericanExpress.com/onlineclaim. After verifying that the store (where you purchased the item) will not accept your return, visit the website or call Amex at 1-800-297-8019.
A third protection offered by almost every American Express card is the extended warranty, and it works in a similar way to purchase and return protection. When you use a qualifying Amex card to make a purchase, you can get an extended warranty on items with a manufacturer’s warranty of less than 5 years. An extended warranty will extend your purchase warranty by one year and provide additional peace of mind.

As soon as the included warranty on your purchase expires, Amex coverage begins. Coverage applies to the total amount charged to your qualifying card, up to a maximum of $10,000 (not to exceed $50,000 per calendar year) .
A similar set of items are excluded from extended warranty coverage benefits — such as physically damaged items, software, motor vehicles, and more. See the extended warranty FAQ page for a full list of exclusions.
Filing a claim online is easy and can be done at AmericanExpress.com/onlineclaim. Or if you prefer to call, you can reach the Extended Warranty Protection Team at 1-800-225-3750.
However, your score will be improved with things like an established credit history and a proven track record of paying bills in full and on time. Plus, your score will benefit if you keep your overall utilization low—so try not to go over your maximum credit limit!

In general, I use Amex credit cards for large, high-value purchases because of the generous policies listed above. Even when earning points may not be optimal, these purchase protections provide a free “insurance policy” that can be incredibly helpful in protecting your most important purchases.
So the next time you’re considering which card to use for a big purchase, pay close attention to whether you’ll benefit from some extra protection. For example, if you’re buying a new refrigerator for a kitchen remodel, wouldn’t it be nice to know that your purchase can be covered by an extra year’s warranty if the manufacturer’s warranty is less than 5 years? I would say so!
Even if it’s not a big purchase, it would be wise to consider using one of the premium Amex cards to purchase items that are somewhat easy to lose, as purchase protection from cards like the Amex Business Platinum includes loss. I know many friends who have spent several hundred dollars on Apple AirPods only to lose one of the earbuds a few weeks later. If they used a qualifying Amex card, they could file a claim and Amex would cover the loss. So again, card purchase protection can be a very valuable benefit.
In addition to earning lots of Amex Membership Rewards points, I love using my American Express cards for added peace of mind. Things like purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty protection have come in handy for my family and I over the past few years, saving us hundreds of dollars.
